Stayed for 1 night on the 14th. The hotel is in a great location, its very small, very basic. It depends what you want, we literally just slept and left as we went for a night out. The carpet had a few staines & they could probably do with replacing the sheets but hey it was for a few hours and the price was reasonable. If your staying for a few days I would suggest you try a different hotel.

This is definitely a cheap and cheerful hotel. It has been recently re-decorated. The location is excellent (right in the city centre), just beware you will need to pay for parking but that's the case anywhere in the centre of Bordeaux.
Our main gripe was that our room is directly opposite the breakfast room making it very noisy during serving times.

Stayed here in May for 2 nights, excellent location, very close to shops and restaurants - room was adequate - small and plain but you get what you paid for. Staff didn't speak much english - and internet was down for the 3 days i was there which was a pain but didn't matter too much.
For what we paid it was sufficient

This is a wonderful tourist hotel ideally located close to all the main attractions in the city centre near some fantastic public spaces and buzzing bars, cafes and restaurants.
While it is by no means a luxurious proposition, it is clean and well-run and represents very good value for quite an expensive town. Unpretentious and basic.
Bed was comfortable and room was larger than expected but it overlooked a derelict building to the rear which attracted a lot of pigeons so I couldn't keep my windows open...no big deal. Bathroom is basic but clean and toiletries reflect the budget price point.
I didn't take the breakfast so I can't comment on this.
Wi-Fi was good enough.
Staff were very helpful especially upon departure; they advised me to take the regular bus (1.50 euro and not the 8 euro Airport shuttle bus) from Place Gambetta instead of a taxi (45 euro). The bus runs four times an hour from 5.30am and is very prompt with a journey time of less than 40 minutes.
One of the night receptionists, a young enough guy in his 20s, recommended that I visit a local wine bar, L'autre Petit Bois; this was an unmissable experience (which i would have missed had i not asked for a recommendation!).
I was very pleased with this hotel, a fine stay.

Room Tip: Try to get a room at the front of the building overlooking the street if you can. They might be dar...

This is a standard and fairly typical basich tourist hotel.Rooms are small, but clean. There was only one A/C outlet in the entire room. Tiny but well functioning lavatory/shower room.

The rating is brought up by one notch due to friendly and very helpful staff, limited to one hall receptionist at all times.

OK, standard continental breakfast in 1st floor breakfast room.

Good location, walking distance to many good restaurants and 10 minutes to riverside tram stop.

The hotel is steps away from a tram stop and close to many of the pedestrianised streets in central Bordeaux. This means it is close to shops, restaurants and tourist attractions. I was a bit hesitant as there have been some negative or ordinary views, but I thought it was reasonable for the price.

The room - yes it is small (I had a single room) but there was a desk and small wardrobe for hanging clothes. My windows opened out onto the street so I had a fantastic view. There is no air-conditioning, however there is a 3-speed ceiling fan. I thought the air circulation with the fan was just fine (and the daytime temperature was about 25-26 degrees when I was in Bordeaux)... I didn't like to leave the windows open because flies kept coming in! As with any budget 2-star hotel, there was no in-room safe or fridge. Free wifi worked fine in all areas of my room (though I note problems with others). Bed was comfortable and my room was quiet, both from the street outside and the hotel inside (I think that the rooms near mine might have been empty... I can see how it can be noisy because the parquetry floor makes lots of noise when you walk on it).

The bathroom - small (the toilet was squished between the shower and the wall) but the shower recess had slightly more room than other single showers due to some extra tiling. The water faucet in the sink had a strange stream that sprayed everywhere, which meant that I had to stand away from the basin so I didn't get wet. Plenty of towels and hand towels provided, but nowhere to hang the hand towel (seems to be common in budget hotels).

The downsides - the lift only starts on the 1st floor so you have to carry your suitcase up. In addition, the lift seems to stop BETWEEN levels. My room was on the 3rd floor, but the 3rd floor lift door opens halfway between 2nd and 3rd floor. (If you are in room 39 right next to the lift, it is the same level). It meant that I had to climb another flight of stairs despite arriving at 3rd floor to get to my room. As others have noted, they are quite strict about checkin time. I arrived at 1.20pm, but I was not allowed to checkin until after 2.00pm. I just dumped my bags on the 1st floor lounge and headed out to sightsee (recommend eating in the St Pierre area - it's got a great vibe).

I have rated it well based on my own experience - solo traveller not requiring heaps of space, quiet room, adequate fan circulation, fantastic street view, comfortable bed, great location.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a street view. Rooms ending in -9 are on the same level as the lift (but it mea...

Basically you can divide hotels into two categories: there are those where you stay for the ambi ence, the character, the experience and therefore expect a high standard of decoration, food, comfort and some added extras. Others, like the Hotel Gambetta, are essentially providing a box to sleep in and as long as they are not overpriced it seems unfair to expect too much at all. So - I'm judging Hotel Gambetta on the quality of the box it provides.
The location is perfect, and that's why I chose it. Of course the trams will bring you quickly in and out of the centre wherever you stay, but it is very nice to be able to come and go so easily, to pop back and put your shopping in your room before going back out for a coffee, for instance, or simply to have a quick nap between visits to museums and art galleries.
The reception staff are friendly and helpful, the rooms are clean and the beds fairly comfortable.
Apart from that it is quite basic. Many of the rooms are very small and look out over an internal shaft. My shower room was tiny - it would be difficult to get in and out if you were overweight. However, for a box to sleep in, it's fine.
The worst downside, however, is the noise. The walls really do seem paper thin and you can hear everything from the neighbouring rooms and corridors.
I was travelling alone and was perfectly comfortable, only slightly inconvenienced by the noise, and would stay here again if I wanted to be in the centre to explore, however it's definitely not a place to come for a romantic weekend!
