“Pied a Terre in Bordeaux City”

Our childrens' god-parents, my wife and I were celebrating the god-parents' 40th Anniversary by being "city tourists" for a change. On the 4th floor of "1bis,Rue des Pontets", my (disabled!) wife especially was pleased the lift was working. The two bedrooms had good-quality, twin beds which could be separate, or pushed together; the open plan main room served as kitchen/diner/lounge with an impressive dining table - the outside roof terrace overlooked the Porte de Bourgoyne and the river, as described.

The superbly efficient tram system had a stop 200 yards away; there is a cafe/boulangerie opposite, but even better a new boulangerie (with its own bakehouse) just round the corner, open 7 days a week. During our stay, croissants and pain au chocolat were on "promo" - so much nicer to get "hot from the oven". Carrefour Supermarket is 10 minutes' walk along the Cours Victor Hugo.

Of our 8 days, we had but one wet afternoon and made the most of the weather, first by taking a whole-day Wine Tour with Frederic (Rendez-vous au Chateau) north of Bordeaux, taking in Pauillac, St Estephe and Pontet Canet, tasting as we went, with a lunch at the Gare Gourmande in Labarde - indulgent, or what? A fine morning is the time to visit the Marche des Capucins - an amazing, eclectic collection of all manner of international food, produce and market "eating places". We managed to get a table at "L'Entrecote"in the City Centre; (only one choice on the menu - entrecote, fries, green salad and house wine) - we wondered why there was always a queue on the street for tables, until we had eaten there.

The transport system in Bordeaux is very comprehensive; 1 euro 50 gets you a ticket to ride the tram, bus or river ferry for an hour - multi journey tickets are available. Ride the tram to get to the Atelier des Chefs (where they run practical cookery sessions - you get to eat what you've cooked) and Le Maison des Vins, where they don't sell wines by the bottle, they simply dispense glasses of local wines at a subsidised, nominal cost, for your "degustation" with sommeliers on hand to explain the characteristics of each. Of the various Museums, my favourite was the Musee des Compagnons du Tour de France, being entirely devoted to the crafts of carpentry and joinery in medieval buildings. So much to choose from.

What I'm saying is that the apartment is ideally located for indulging in all these activities. The beds are very comfortable and the terrace is a most agreeable place to unwind after a day in the City, before venturing out for supper. Restaurant choice is HUGE (1,540 in Bordeaux) - closest are St Michel Passageway Brasserie and two Morrocan restuarants just 5 minutes away, in front of the Eglise St Michel. In reality, we didn't spend a great deal of time actually IN the apartment, save for sleeping and breakfast , but were comfortable when we did. Isn't that what City touristing is about?

“Very disappointing”
Reviewed September 24, 2014 for a stay in August 2014

This property photographs well but does not reflect the actual quality. The lift was out of action, and to the owners credit she did offer a refund which we took. Apart from the out of action lift the apartment was dirty when we arrived. The bathroom, which I had to clean still had other peoples toiletries there. The wardrobe in the main bedroom was an IKEA rack. The toilet stank and again I had to clean it. The toilet flushing system is intermittent and we had to keep a bucket of water to flush the toilet. The second bedroom wardrobe had a curtain to shut it off from the room and the wardrobe itself was dirty and full of 'bits'.

The owner needs to supervise the cleaning better and the quality of the furnishings need attending to. The furniture was faded, armchair (plastic) was peeling, additional seating was two cushions placed on the old fireplace. Must do better. Will not recommend to anyone.

Management Response
Oct 1, 2014
It's hard to imagine two more different experiences of Bordeaux Terrace those reflected by these two reviews. Fortunately, the guests who posted the review “A great flat with a stunning balcony in the heart of a beautiful old city” are far more typical of the many who have enjoyed staying there, and written glowing reviews in our guestbook and on other websites. As the "disappointed" guest points out, there were (unusual) maintenance issues during her stay, including the lift being out of order for the first time in many years, so she only stayed briefly and we gave a refund. I am surprised about the cleaning issue - this is not a common experience and we'll make sure it doesn't happen again. As for "other people's toiletries", we provide cooking essentials in the kitchen cupboard, new soap and shampoo in the bathroom, and there are also a few useful items such as shaving cream and cotton buds left by other guests. Usually people are grateful for these. I can only imagine that the lack of a lift must have put this guest in a very negative frame of mind, because she didn't even mention the most lovely thing about the apartment - the terrace with the beautiful view.

“A great flat with a stunning balcony in the heart of a beautiful old city”
Reviewed August 17, 2014 for a stay in August 2014

We had a lovely time using the flat as the base from which to explore the wonderful old city of Bordeaux and the surrounding region. The flat itself provides all you want of a city-centre base - it is right in the heart of the old city, it is set in a grand old building, it is comfortable (the two bedrooms are a bit dark and can trap the heat, but the provision of floor-based fans in both really helped - and the beds themselves are comfortable - the bathroom very modern and with a very good shower; the toilet a little older and not quite so advanced, but nevertheless quite adequate), and it is well equipped with most things you need - but the balcony, with its view over the Bourgogne arch and the Pierre bridge really caps it all off and provides a wonderful place to eat or just to enjoy the world passing by. The city itself needs nothing said about it other than it lives up to all expectations, and the surrounding area (we visited the wine-making area of St Emilion and the enormous dune of Pyla) rather lovely. We drove there, and found the parking facilities perfectly convenient once we had worked them out. Overall, a great venue for a visit to a great city.
