Having just booked into our hotel opposite the theatre in Bordeaux the Bar a Vin was the perfect place to pause and make plans for places to discover in this beautifully restored city. Cross the road from the tourist office, take a seat on the pavement in the sun and begin to observe the Bordelais at work and play. All this of course is helped by good food and drink and the Bar a Vin is the perfect location in which to do this. The sun shone brightly on the afternoon of our visit. Wines from the local surrounding vineyards and the sommeliers who serve at table are extremely knowledgeable about their product. Wine is, of course, best appreciated when accompanied with the right food and here the little plates of food which were an optional extra had been designed to marry perfectly with the different wines. We each chose an Haut Medoc Chateau Beaumont and a mixed platter of fine cheeses and thinly sliced Swiss beef. Beautiful and all that for around 12 euros in total. We were tempted to prolong the afternoon sitting in the sun imbibing the wine and the atmosphere but we had a lot to see and do but will definitely be returning on our next visit to Bordeaux. Veni, vidi vici. Recommended.

All wines are served by the glass. All are good value (between 4 of us we tried a few) in really comfortable, friendly surroundings (in contrast the the rather clinical surroundings at Max Bordeaux). There is a good range from AOC Bordeaux to less well known Chateaux, but including the excellent Cremant de Bordeaux and whites from Pessac Leognan. Recommended.

At 1, Cours Du 30 Juillet, opposite the tourist office in the heart of Bordeaux, I would consider this place to be is definitely worth the visit. It's a great place to sample a wide variety of wines There are about 20 wines on the menu -- all sold by the glass, all at very reasonable prices (i.e., wine store prices, as opposed to restaurant prices).
