“Mixed feelings”
Reviewed June 12, 2011

The hotel is in a wonderful location in the old town center - we walked everywhere easily. Our biggest problem is the hotel is the thick of renovation. We arrived and were informed on the spot that the hotel is not finished. We were offered either the choice of a twin room with no table or a double room with no TV nor table. The hallway and stairways are far from being done - no carpet with tons of tools and construction materials lying around (there is a working elevator). We looked at both options and one of the rooms had very strong new paint smell - impossible to stay there. We were give a 8 Euro discount a night for the situation.
My first reaction is cancel the reservation and go somewhere else - how can they not tell us ahead of the time that the hotel and our rooms are not finished?! But we were tired and it was late so we took the room with less smell.
The rest of the stay was uneventful - it was very quite so we slept well. Staff was pretty friendly.
I will stay at this hotel if it's all finished, as the location and price were good. As it is now, I don't think I will recommend it to our friends - you might end up getting a room with no desk and empty lamp shades with no light bulbs.
Make sure you check with the hotel about the details of your room if you are booking the hotel.

Currently being renovated until september 2011. Renovations are to poor quality finish. Fixtures cheap and badly thought through. The owner here has no respect for his guests we were given a room incomplete, additons included bare live electrical wires and being awoken at 8am by an angle grinder in the room below. Breakfast is poor. And I can not see how the cheap renovations will even warrent over £100per night when finished. Rip off hotel. Was meant to be a end of holiday treat in an nice hotel.

We stayed the night at this hotel as part of a wine tasting experience. The rooms were fine but what made the place was the lovely lady on the reception desk who was so knowledgeable. Wea sked to book a table at a restaurant which we had researched - but it was full but she actually found us a much better one which was frequented by the locals rather than tourists - so we were delighted. When we came back we were greeted by another gentleman who was so polite. Breakfast was very nice too - so we we all really enjoyed our experience of Hotel de la Presse and we will return again soon...

Spent 3 nights at Hotel De La Presse. Helpful and friendly staff. A clean and spacious room (I stayed in room 204 which comfortably fitted two double beds, although some of the other rooms were very small as I looked at the hotel floor plan). Some noise from outside but it is central Bordeaux after all. I had many questions for the staff who were only too happy to answer my queries. I'd certainly recommend this hotel, but there are some small rooms. A clean and elgeant entrance. A great hotel.

We picked the Presse because of its central location. The lobby is small, but our room was of a decent size. Despite its very central location, the rooms were quiet. This is not a luxury place, but the location makes up for it!!

We ended up at Hotel de la Prese having had a bad experience at a neighbouring pre-booked hotel and were lucky enough to find a room available that night. Hotel de la Presse has a very central location. We found the reception staff to be extremely friendly and welcoming. The room was great, very clean with a comfortable bed, nice bathroom, stocked mini-bar, hair dryer, TV and there was no problem at all with noise. On the downside, it was on the small side with not much room to settle in and hang clothes. We had the breakfast which was ok but not really worth the money - we would recommend venturing out into the street for breakfast at a local cafe, it is cheaper and more atmospheric. The hotel was good value for money and overall we would certainly stay here again and would not hesitate to recommend it for anyone staying for a weekend in Bordeaux

  • Liked — the very friendly reception staff
  • Disliked — the lack of wardrobe hanging space

Obviously one's experience of a hotel depends largely on the
room allocation. Perhaps because we booked months in advance,
and for a four-night stay, our room was very pleasant. Although the furniture and fittings indicated that the hotel has seen better days, the room was spacious, clean and quite comfortable. As a bonus, it also had a balcony overlooking the street. Unlike other reviewers, we had no problems with street noise at night - though we did object to the nightly gathering of scruffy young scroungers and their dogs outside the nearby McDonald's.
The staff of the hotel were extremely pleasant and helpful, with skills in English much better than ours in French. We had an excellent breakfast served in our room each morning, adding to our overall favourable experience of this well-run small hotel.
