We bought some amazing cheeses and sausages from the food market here before strolling through the large antiques market (all on a Sunday).

The tourist information office and also our train tour of Bordeaux raved about Quinconces Esplanade and how it is the biggest square in Europe but when we visited, we were incredibly underwhelmed. I won't deny that it's a very impressive space but there was nothing going there which was quite disappointing - perhaps it was just the time of year. However, we were very impressed with the Monument des Girondins. The structure is very beautiful and the surrounding fountains were incredible - well worth visiting for that.

sooo sad, they had a complete funfare going on. I passed by on a Friday night. all the rides were running well and no lines to get on them. In fact no-one was on them! There was hardly one human being in the entire place. Was so surreal, I wish I had had something to film with. Maybe the entire thing was happening for the ghosts of Bordeaux to enjoy the rides!??. Weirdly enough, it was the same night as the carnival of "le Bordeaux negre" - black/negro Bordeaux to celebrate their history of the slave trade??? I remain stunned!

We were most unfortunate to be visiting when the entire Esplanade was transformed into a massive fairground so its entire historical grand-ness disappeared. We could not even appreciate the superb "Le monument aux Girondis" (the column with fountain) as it was drowned in a sea of clamour, metal and tacky rides :( If we return to Bordeaux, would definitely like to return to see it in all its glory
