It was a beautiful night in Bordeaux so we wanted to dine outdoors in one of the many al fresco restaurants. We strolled around town and spotted a nice setting at Le Gabriel Bistro overlooking a beautiful square leading to the river and waited for a table to become available. The staff were friendly and efficient and the menu had a reasonably priced fixed menu alongside the ala carte menu. The food was tasty (my husband is STILL talking about his dish) paired with a delicious demi bottle of regional red wine. The overall experience was pleasant and good value for money, which was a bonus.

“poor service”
Reviewed October 10, 2012

This was our fourth visit to this bistro and over a period of one year the service has changed from efficient and attentive to offhand and sometimes hostile. They promise a table by the window at time of booking then refuse to meet such promise on arrival, appearing to save it for more important customers, however of one occasion it remained empty all night.

Service had become very slow and we were forced to put empty wine and water bottles on the floor in order to have enough room to use our glasses. The waiters had been asked but had failed to clear glasses and bottles. The food is reasonable both in price and quality but nowhere near as reliably good as it once was.

“Restaurant review - pricey but worth it.”
Reviewed October 8, 2012

There are effectively three operations here. On the ground floor is the bar, on the first floor is the bistro, and on the third floor is the Michelin starred restaurant. This review is of the restaurant.

As you would expect from a Michelin starred restaurant the service was unobtrusive, polite, and efficient. The prices were eye-wateringly high but if you are pushing the boat out for a special occasion, worth it. Bookings are essential.

“Nice place for cocktails !”
Reviewed October 6, 2012

This place is knownfor its bistro and gourmet restaurant BUT its also has a bar that serves nice cocktails. There are few places in Bordeaux that serve cocktails as there are mainly wine bars...
I had a delicious Expresso Martini with friends, very good. I wish they gave us olives or even peanuts....
They should also improve the atmosphere ( lighting, music,...)

“Good quality restaurant with great view”
Reviewed October 2, 2012

The restaurant overlooks La Place de la Bourse with its magnificent fountain - wonderfully lit at night. It is very close to (and visible from) the tram stop and very convenient therefore. Service in the bistrot was unobtrusive, but very efficient. The set menu was good value at 29€ and offered a reasonably wide choice for each course. My starter of warm foie gras was delicious - light and delicate - and the carpaccio of bream ordered by one of our travelling companions was also excellent. My wife and I both had bavette of steak for our main course and this was pink and tasty, although the sauce was a little uninspired.
The desserts from the trolley were very enticing but I opted for crème brûlée which was creamy and light. I never understand why so many restaurants want to add fruit, chocolate or whatever else to this simple classic - here it was as it should be, with an excellent crisp melted sugar topping. The alternative cheese plate chosen by my wife was generous too (no supplement, unlike the UK). The wine selection was Bordeaux dominated of course, but I was very pleased with the white Pessac Leognan suggested by the waiter and we enjoyed a full, fruity red from Fronsac to follow. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable meal in a very good quality restaurant.
