Even though i made a reservation my name wasn't on the list, only after a phone call to a greater power were we allowed in!!! After a great meal we waited 25 minutes to have our plates cleared, everyone around had been seated and served and fed,, we caught waitresses eye 4 times in which she motioned I'll be there in 2 minutes. Half an hour of waiting for table to be cleared of dirty plates and order coffee and dessert, We finally estimated our bill to be 36 euros and left money and all plates on our table, Only then did a head waiter think we had dodged the bill came running out to us.... It turned out we miscalculated the bill by 20cents, (including all tax, tips and service charge) for which he argued and yelled at us for short paying in front of potential patrons... Absolutely gob-smacked. Service horrendous!! And hour and half for one Course and sparkling water!!

Fantastic setting in a cave, very spacious and neat with large hearty portions, not a fine food but excellent value.

Gurtlerhoft is situated in the vault beneath the restaurant Au Dauphin and opposite the Maison Kammerzell on the Place de la Cathedrale. It is obviously a hugely popular place, and they have a double-service system, i.e. you can book for 6:30 PM and have to leave by 9:30 PM or book from 9:30 PM onwards. This may in a sense run contrary to the French tradition of spending a whole evening at the table, but if you're lucky and make it on the 9:30 list you can stay as long as you please.
This is something that you'll want to do, since the food, service and atmosphere are all excellent, and the surroundings very conducive to a nice romantic meal. As it so happened, both of us ate the same thing, foie gras as an appetizer - outstanding; and carré de veau with a fantastic sauce as a main dish. Topped out with the usual crème brûlée and generous servings of Gewürztraminer Vendanges Tardives as an aperitif, a good local Riesling for the main course and a triple helping of Marc de Gewürztraminer (a very strong liqueur served ice cold - be careful, you may not be able to stand up after this digestive :)
Anyway, the table service is very friendly, attentive and fast (they have to be, with two waves of customers per night, and dodging the stone pillars and running up the steps to the raised platform at the far end). They do all this very well and are obviously very much at ease - which contributes to the feeling of welcoming efficiency.
I have no negative remarks whatsoever about this restaurant, even the prices are very reasonable (the big menu is only 31 Euros per person).
Definitely visit this for great cuisine Alsacienne.... but remember to book first!!
