“Not in the top 10”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

Having visited S'kaechele on TA recommendation we were rather surprised at the high ranking of this establishment. It is definitely nice and homely with the lively and very chatty Karine creating a great atmosphere. But number 2 out of 721 restaurants in Strasbourg? Ahead of the fabulous (ok, a bit of a tourist trap) Maison Kammerzell?

The food was tasty but plain. Sophisticated it wasn't. The wine list, like in other small establishments dotted round the city, was limited though selected with care.

Try pig’s cheeks for novelty value – the meat is tender and well prepared. The lamb shank was nicely cooked, though not that imaginatively prepared.

Thus if you want a culinary experience or a romantic treat you would not go there.

Booking is recommended.

“Alsatian cuisine at its best, location hard to find”
Reviewed February 20, 2013

This winstub (Alsatian equivalent to bistrot) is quaint, intimate, ideal for a romantic dinner. English is barely spoken, so better practice French or bring along someone who can help.
The specialty of course is all Alsatian, the home made "foie gras de canard" appetizer was out of this world - the owner would not divulge the recipe, but admitted the presence of several aromas including port wine in the overall preparation, which apparently takes a full week for the aging process. For the main dish, the "rognons de veau" (veal kidneys) were excellent. Be prepared to explore typical meat dishes from entrails (lamb brains, sweetbreads, beef tongue), admittedly a courageous choice for most Americans not used to these choice cuts.
The wine was honest, a local pinot noir, nicely paired with the meal. Price was on the high side, but it should be expected for a classy establishment.
Final note, the restaurant location was hard to find, given the typical one-way alleys and pedestrian areas zig-zagging all over the Strasbourg center. We parked over a mile away in a public lot and walked in the drizzling winter rain GPS on hand. Very much needed for first timers. it was all worth it.

“Remarkable experience!”
Reviewed February 12, 2013

I found this restaurant according to nice reviews on Tripadvisor. It was the best meal I had in Strasbourg!
The place is in the centre just few steps from Grande rue (main street in downtown) but in a tiny street so it is really quiet place. The interior is cozy and romantic, just few tables.
The main part - meal was amazing! Each dish was excellently prepared with awsome taste and smell. You can choose from typical Alsacien quisine (escargots, fois gras) but also from international but well prepared dishes. The choise of wine is nice, French wine is so good with french quisine..
The waitress was so nice, helpful and friendly, speaking also german and english.
I enjoyed my dinner so much!!
P.S.: It is better to make reservation in advance at least one day, but it totally worths it!

“Amazing Alsace´s restaurant!”
Reviewed February 5, 2013

We´ve visited this restaurant during our stay in Strasbourg.

We were nice surprised that the restaurant has just 10 tables. The atmosphere was so nice and romantic!

The food was so excelent, we had three courses and everythink was perfect!!

The lady in the restaurant is very helpful, she speaks french, german and english. She gave us advices about wine and also descriptions of meals.

It was amazing experience for us, we enjoyed it so much and we would like to visit this restaurant again.

Just a little note: We would really appreciate when the whipped cream was made from fresh cream instead of spray. The other dishes had so high level of quality that this was little disappointment for us. But it didn´t effected our excellent experience at all!

“Tiny, friendly, cozy”
Reviewed January 29, 2013

and, of course, excellent food. The menu is quite short and the food on the robust side, but you won't regret it. The wine suggestion was excellent. The place is really very very small so it might be a good idea to book a table.
