Ibis Budget Colmar Centre Ville
Ranked #23 of 39 Hotels in Colmar
Reviewed September 20, 2009

1. The location was good, about a 10-minute walk from the train station. It was a 5-minute walk to the main square and the tourist information office. It was located on a major road, but the traffic noise was not bad.
2. The price was excellent. Booked directly on their website.
3. The hotel was a typical Etap: functional, clean, and new multi-story building. In lieu of a room key or key card, you are given a code number, which you punch in at the front door to get into the hotel, and then to get into your room.
4. The ensuite room was typical Etap. Modern, simple, clean and functional. TV with BBC. Individually-controlled A/C. Foamish (but comfortable) bunk-bed (the lower bed is a double, while the upper “bunk” is smaller). Good for families with a kid. The bathroom was in two separate rooms; the toilet in one room, and the shower in another. The sink was in the room.
5. The front staffers were on duty for only certain hours; however, they were efficient, friendly and spoke English.

I stayed at the Etap Hotel Colmar for four nights in July 2009 and found that, while basic, it was extremely well located and with very pleasant staff.

It was my first stay in an Etap - during previous recent visits to France I had stayed exclusively in Ibis hotels, the next step up in the Accor brand. I wasn't sure how much of a difference to expect between the two chains but ultimately did find it to be fairly marked. Etap is certainly a no frills experience and, as such, both the room and the breakfast were basic.

I read a review on this site comparing the Etap rooms to those in a dorm (or hall of residence as us Brits call them!), and found this to be an excellent description. The room was relatively small, with a tiny separate toilet, a separate shower, and the wash basin within the room itself. The bed is a double, but with a bunk bed above it. There was a small table with a chair, but the proximity of this to the bed made it relatively difficult to sit at the table in comfort. There was a small but adequate television which did show a limited range of foreign channels (Italian, German, and English if memory serves) and was equipped with Canal+. It is worth mentioning that I did find the reception on some channels to be poor.

Cleanliness in the room was a slight issue. It is certainly not the case that anything was dirty but nor were things entirely spotless, and on one day I'm fairly certain that the room was not cleaned or tidied beyond making the bed.

The hotel does not have a proper restaurant but does serve breakfast each morning and, I believe, can provide some snacks. There are also two vending machines in reception - one providing hot drinks and the other cold drinks and snacks. The breakfast was a bit of a step down from what I was used to at Ibis - there was no fresh fruit, and no croissants or other pastries, both of which I found somewhat of a disappointment. That said, there was a variety of fresh breads, cereal, a range of yoghurts, compote, and cheese and meat - a fairly impressive spread given that this is a one star hotel.

I would say that the main plus of the hotel is the location. It is within a few minutes' walk of the picturesque centre of Colmar and so absolutely perfect as a base to explore the town. It is also extremely close to an Intermarché hypermarket. While Intermarché isn't, in my inexperience, the most upmarket French supermarket brand, this branch does have an excellent range of items and means you can easily stock up on provisions for the day before you go on your way. If you didn't want to have breakfast in the hotel, you could easily pop along here for some croissants. There is also a Domino's Pizza on the same road for those missing the taste of takeaway! The hotel is also within easy reach of the train station - perhaps a ten minute walk - and the route is extremely well signposted. I travelled by train so I can't comment on the ease of finding the hotel by car, but did notice what appeared to be a pretty large, gate-protected hotel car park.

The other main plus of the hotel was the staff. Throughout my stay I was extremely impressed by every employee I met. Everyone from the housekeeping staff to the receptionists were pleasant and helpful and willing to be patient with my somewhat faltering French!

And it is because of the friendliness of its staff, and its excellent location, that I would recommend this hotel - assuming you're happy with rather basic facilities. It you're looking for luxury this certainly isn't the place for you but if your priority is to find somewhere convenient, cheap and friendly to hang your hat during your stay in Colmar then the Etap should be right up your street.

This hotel is situated within a 5 minute walk to both the tourist center and the train station. It is the poorer version in the Accor chair (Mercure, Ibis). A receptionist (French, some English/German) is availble till 10 pm, afterwards, registration is by keyboard entry from the lobby. There are no keys to lose, as the entry is by numerical key code. The rooms are extremely basic, and resemble a college dorm room, with a modular shower, and small sink in the room. An important asset for families are rooms with a bunk bed for one, above the double bed, suitable for older children (or close friends). What makes this so special is the price- 37 Euros weekdays, 35 Euros weekend days!! with a small supplement for 2 or 3. Don't pay for the parking lot, they will tell you about the free lot just a few meters down the road. No need to waste money on more expensive hotels, as this is so convenient!
