“Perfect location in Colmar”
Reviewed April 23, 2014

This beautiful old hotel is located smack dab in the middle of the picturesque old town of Colmar. We drove to the hotel and parked in a large open free parking lot, but it took a good while to find a space by circling around multiple times, since everyone else is looking for free parking. The rooms are smallish, but nicely restored and decorated, and the bathroom was sparkling clean. The bed was very comfy and lined up with the flat screen TV on the wall. Our room had a balcony terrace which made it very nice to enjoy the mild March temperatures, and unwind with a glass of wine and cheeses. I believe there are only two rooms in the hotel with a balcony. The staff were very polite and helpful, and spoke good English. Their internet is free and it is fast and reliable. There is a "Casino" grocery and beverage store directly across the street from the hotel, in case you want to grab a quick snack or drink, but there is also a Monoprix grocery store a few blocks away. From the hotel you can easily walk the entire old town with ease, and if you get tired, its nice to know its only a short walk back to the hotel. There are an overwhelming number of restaurants, snack bars, cafes, bakeries, and shops close to the hotel. The central public market is also a very short and almost direct walk from the hotel, and it is super clean, colorful and orderly. The Colmar train station is about a 12-15minute walk from the hotel, through quiet, elegant neighborhoods. By booking in advance thru the hotel site we were able to obtain a very reasonable room rate (without breakfast), and they accept all types of credit cards, including AMEX! If you want to save money on breakfast, you can stop in at any café along the street. I would not hesitate to return to this hotel, and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Hotel St. Martin is located in the heart of the old part of Colmar. If you have a car, it's a little bit of a hassle to find the free lot two blocks from the hotel. Two blocks by foot, lots of winding narrow brick roads by car. The hotel itself is old and quaint, with lots of stone nooks and alcoves. Our room was on the third floor in the back. I had asked for a quiet room off the street, and the hotel management asked if I minded the three flight walk to have a larger "family size" room. The room was an attic with sloped eaves and a lovely view out two windows. The only noise was the sound of bells from nearby churches. The climb up a narrow spiral stairway was a bit much for late-50s folks with not-great knees but on balance was worth the solitude. The bathroom was exceptional. Modern sink and shower with an excellent adjustable shower head and good water pressure. The heated towel rack was an unexpected amenity, and helped dry our hand-washables efficiently. Comfortable bed, though the blanket could have been less pilled; I like hotels that cover blankets with a top layer of sheets to ensure cleanliness. We opted not to take the 12€ per person breakfast, opting instead for cafés within two blocks where we got coffees and croissants for 8€ for two people.

Colmar is a medieval town, like Rothenburg (Germany) without the crowds. Hotel Saint Martin has a perfect location in the heart of the old town, surrounded by lots of great restaurants, shopping, touring. We stayed here in March 2013 for 76 Euro (+12 Euro each for typical European continental breakfast buffet). Free parking 2 blocks away or covered, secure paid parking approximately 2-3 blocks away. Must be able to go up and down some stairs to get to rooms and dining in the hotel. Friendly, English-speaking staff. We ate dinner at Maison Rouge nearby, for a delicious typical Alsace meal. Colmar is about 45 minutes from Freiburg, Germany.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 4, which had a comfortable temperapedic style mattress, modern bath. Cozy.

The Saint Martin is centrally located in the old town of quaint Colmar. It is an easy walk from the train station and near many restaurants. The rooms are cute and very clean. The breakfast is fantastic. The people are the front desk are very helpful. The Christmas Markets were unique and wonderful.

We selected the Hotel Saint Martin from the internet, but had a good idea of location from previous visits. It proved to beat even our highest expectations - it could not be more centrally placed in Colmar's Old Town.

The building (or rather, buildings - the hotel consists of several, joined together by a pretty little courtyard), is like most of the others in the town centre, that is, genuinely old but tastefully preserved. We had two bedrooms - both cozy in size and decor and both in the attic roof spaces. My five-year old grandson was charmed by his 'special' room - entered up a winding wooden staircase inside the bedroom door. Both rooms were comfortably heated for winter and there were discreetly-fitted air-con units in each for summer. There was a nice little elevator to reach the rooms on the third floor.

The Old Town itself, surrounding the hotel, resembles a well-built Hollywood film set, except that behind the authentically-old facades are equally-well preserved interiors. The hotel serves only breakfast from a well-stocked buffet in a charming room, but it is surrounded by a range of restaurants and bars, as well as a wide variety of nicely-stocked tourist shops.

Colmar is equally nice in summer and winter, but the Christmas Market, spread around the centre in five uniquely-themed locations, is the nicest I have ever seen. The presence of local products, food, wines and Christmas artifacts, is strong - not much on sale here is made outside Alsace - or so it seems.

One final tip - avoid weekends before Christmas - we arrived on a sunny Sunday and the streets were packed. On the Monday, however, the street markets were open again at ten a.m. but it was far less crowded.

During the Christmas Market season, all the streets are blocked to cars except to residents, so our taxi driver advised us to walk from the railway station. This is a fifteen-minute walk mostly through the seasonally-decorated park (skating rink and children's rides) and the old Town. Take a street plan with you, as the Old Town has narrow streets and finding the hotel by instinct is not easy - Tip...from the station, head for the Mercure Hotel on the edge of the park and keep walking into the Old Town - you will hit Grand Rue soon afterwards. Turn left there to find the Hotel Saint Martin.

Room Tip: All rooms are different, so it is hard to recommend one. We liked ours on the third attic floor - #2...

Building that dates from 1361. Art nouveau decor with rich colours. Opposite one of the Christmas markets and within a 10min radius walk to al the other markets, place of interest and little venice. Several restaurants from budget to exclusive to choose from in the node. Supermarket directly opposite hotel. We took a taxi to the station but I gather it could be a 10 min walk if you know your way. We had a family room to accommodate us 5 (3 kids). Clean rooms. Sleeping arrangements comprised a double bed, single bed and 2 day beds. Satisfactory. Bedding comprised blankets with sheets and very flat soft cushions which we found uncomfortable. Personally we Prefer duvets as well. Spacious bathroom with bath and overhead shower. Separate toilet. Did not opt for breakfast. Overall service was satisfactory. Loved the locality and would make the sacrifice of bedding vs locality any time. Free wi-fi with good signal.

Room Tip: Floors are serviced with lifts so you do not have to worry on sight of the spiral staircases. Overlo...

The Hotel Saint Martin is in the center of Colmar and offers great value for money. We stayed in the family room which was very nice and clean, but the bathroom was a little cosy.
The staff were very friendly and welcoming.
