This newly renovated hotel is in a renaissance building in the ‘old’ part of town, and offers modern amenities in a charming setting (check out the staircase next to the lift). Check-in was quick and business-like but not especially friendly. Reception staff were very helpful when asked. Our ‘Superior’ room was spacious, clean, simply but nicely furnished, with a good outlook to the street where there was always interesting activity to watch. There was some road noise generated by the cobblestone street, but this was no problem if the double glazed windows were closed. Breakfast was good without being special. The old town of Colmar is a ‘picture postcard’, and well situated to explore the Alsace ‘wine road’. Beyond the rows of half-timbered houses and wonderful Unterlinden museum (and Bartholdi Museum), however, there is not much to do. We did enjoy just wandering the streets. On Tuesdays in the warmer months there is a folk music night in the Place De L’Ancienne Douane, which is a lot of fun. For good restaurants at fair prices close to the Colombier check out Winstub Brenner (very friendly, quality regional cuisine) and Le Frichi’s (superb fine dining). Richon Patisserie, almost opposite the Colombier, was a winner.
