Description: Sokrates Taverna on Northenden Road in Sale is a super-friendly, casual Greek & Mediterranean restaurant serving delicious cuisine from Greece and Cyprus. The Meze menu at Sokrates Taverna with its variety of dishes is perfect for parties and group get-togethers and the restaurant's wine list has an excellent selection of wines plus beers from Greece and Cyprus. From the A'la Carte menu one can enjoy traditional dishes like Stifado (a beef and onion casserole), the classic Mousaka and of course delicious meat skewers (kebabs) cooked on real charcoal.

i ate here on a thursday evening, table booked for 6.30pm, and the restaurant was fairly quiet. people started coming in more towards 7 or 8, as is more traditional in greece i suppose!

i was there with my boyfriend and a vegetarian friend, so we had the vegetarian meze banquet for 2 (there's a discount voucher on their website for this, and they offered us the choice of including fish, i declined as allergic) and the lamb kleftiko. usually when the word banquet appears in a restaurant menu i prepare to be disappointed - here it actually applies! (see next para)

don't expect reheated fast food here, they know how to cook things properly and kleftiko is slow cooked. it was perfectly done, as well as or better than food i have tried in various parts of greece, and it was a large portion.

i was equally if not more so impressed with the vegetarian spread, which as a meat eater doesn't happen too often. we had tsatziki, pepper and feta dip, garlic potato dip, hummus and a (slightly too strong!) strong sesame seed based one with a bread basket, chick pea curry, aubergine stew, dolmades, fried aubergine, vegetable cakes, broad bean stew, rice, olives, greek salad, fried feta, stuffed peppers, garlic mushrooms and probably a couple of dishes i've forgotten! all were delicious, except the strong sesame seed one. otherwise, flawless. we also ordered garlic bread which was great. all the food was full of flavour, which is probably why i've managed to remember most of them a day later and the variety was impressive to say the least.

the portions are so large we could have had the 2 meze between 3 of us without the lamb, instead maybe getting a starter (and we were all hungry to start with and ate until totally stuffed)

the service was friendly and efficient, all food was clearly cooked fresh as the dishes arrived as they were ready, with a gap before the lamb and meze main courses. this was just as well because we needed a breather in order to tackle the next round of food!

the music played was greek traditional which added to the atmosphere and was at just the right volume to encourage chatter, the atmosphere was informal and pleasant.

bill came straight away when we asked for it, and at £60 for 3 of us including 2 drinks it was definately value for money, especially considering we should have ordered less!

sale is 15 minutes by car for us, tried this place as trip advisor recommended it for vegetarians, definitely true and will definitely return once we have recovered from this massive banquet :)

Went here with 2 friends with no reservation. We were made very welcome by enthusiastic friendly staff
Al the food was spot on and brought back memories of Cretan holidays. Will certainly be going back to Socrates the next time I am next in Sale

We eat at Socrates with friends on our last evening in UK. Very good choice on menu, reasonable prices & excellent meals & service. There is a lot of competition in this part of Sale & Socrates is very unassuming from outside but worth a visit.

Pleasant and Fast service, Excellent cuisine!. The folks here are really pleasant and always happy to see ya! Enjoyed the Meze for two. Then had the Grilled chicken with chic peas and eggplant in a spicy red sauce. Portion was large and was very flavorful with a nice heat to it. Wife had the chicken and spinach in a white feta cream sauce, tasted good but feta flavor overpowered all the other ingredients. Was stuffed when we left, probably would order just the entree next time.
