After trailing round Manchester on a rainy evening looking at many menus in restaurant windows we decided on Pearl City and was very happy with our choice. I don't eat meat and my husband wanted dim sum and there was a good variety of options for us both. All of the dishes were lovely and the staff were friendly and attentive. I will definitely return when I next visit Manchester.

We have always eaten at Pearl City whenever we have visited Chinatown and were completely let-down by the whole experience this weekend.

The staircase on the way up to the restaurant was shabby and smelt very musty. The shabbiness extended into the restaurant itself. The tablecloth although laundered had a range of black marks and cigarette burns on it. The sinks in the ladies toilet were surrounded by black mould and all the fititngs were old. Most of the waiting staff looked thoroughly dejected with no-one smiling and certainly no pleasantries (my husbands plate was removed whilst he was still eating!). If the food had been up to the restaurants previous standards it would have lessened the overall disappointment but this wasn't the case, it was expensive and average at best.

Due to some comments read prior to our visit, I had some hesitancy in making a booking to celebrate my 12 year old grand child's birthday. However, it was better than expected. The tables looked attractively set and had 'skirted' covers on the chairs. Lighting was attractive and our welcome was good.Three of the group arrived first and as soon as the other three arrived we were told where they were sitting. We ordered the banquet and had previewed two extra dishes from a la carte but the waitress very helpfully said we would only need the one as the meal was very ample and she was right. Portions are good. The starters for the banquet were excellent and the Peking duck which was shredded at the table was plump and tasty with plenty of pancakes. If I have a criticism of the food it would be that the main servings were not very varied. Of the four on the banquet menu two were beef, one chicken and one duck. We had also added sweet and sour pork, a favourite of the 'party girl'. Instead of two beef, i would have preferred a prawn or fish dish to make greater variety.

It was good value for money and i would go again. Most of the clients were Chinese that evening and that is surely a recommendation in itself.

Little known fact: Manchester has one of the largest Chinatowns in Europe. Little surprisingly, this does not necessarily mean that you will get all the best food there. Pearl City stands out insofar as prices are modest and the selection is good. Try the King Prawns as they are usually large and fresh. Likewise the beef and the other meat dishes. The selection of dim sum is absolutely worth trying as well. If you had CRS before, you might want to stay away from most of the places in Chinatown in the first place.
