Visited last week, food was very good (braised beef in ale with mashed potato - sounds dull was anything but). Plenty to look at inside, the place has a lot of history.

Staff were very friendly, only complaint is that it is a little pricey at £20 for a steak, still on the whole would go again.

This is a hidden gem. Well worth a visit. After work it's packed with business people as it has a wonderful old pub atmosphere and great beer! The Resteraunt isn't very large so definitely book in advance. The food is high end pub food, large portions and very tasty but a bit expensive. Great place for couples and business dinners/lunches. Highly recommended.

Attracted by the internet write-ups. Visited there on a Thursday evening with my son named Thomas so it was a good surprise for him. Steeped in history, it is narrow and long, originally a Townhouse then converted into an Alehouse and Restaurant. Retains much of the original decorative tilework. This is not a 'spit and sawdust' British pub with nooks and booths as its shape does not permit. The entrance area functions as a standing 'supping' area and after you nudge your way through the noisy throng you enter the long dining area with a wine bar to one side. The appearance is not especially pub-like in parts mainly because of its layout but in other respects passes the test admirably. The food was well presented although my Lancashire HotPot was not especially memorable. The Rhubarb pie was strangely paired with both custard and ice cream although it worked quite well. Service was a little slow but friendly. Overall, this is a very pleasant place to visit and dine.

Thank you for your review. I have passed your comment onto chef, the dessert is one of her favourites hence the ice cream and custard most people have been surprised and pleased with the taste.

I've eaten here a few times and can highly recommend the babies y'ead (Steak and kidney pudding). There are plenty of places cheaper to eat in Manchester, but for traditional english food with a couple of good guest ales on the bar you wouldn't go far wrong by dropping in here.
