Went to this restaurant last night with my husband. We dine in West Didsbury regularly but have always overlooked Cachumba. We fancied trying somewhere new and we were not disappointed! We opted for the Rice Table - the banquet-style option for which the restaurant is well known. We received about 5 dishes along with rice and flatbread - and all were delicious. The dhal in particular was stunning. The flavours were fresh and the dishes were interesting - this was not your typical unhealthy-feeling curry. The portions were also perfect - plenty to fill us up but not overfacing. It was also pleasing that there were some vegetable options within the banquet - too often a meal out means foregoing your greens, but not here.

There was a good range of drinks on offer and the waiter was lovely - very friendly. The atmosphere is relaxed and the Eastern-inspired decor suits the venue. The only tiny gripe was that my husband had to ask twice for a second drink - perhaps a second member of waiting staff would be welcome on a busy Friday night - but otherwise this was a great venue and we will be back!

I very first went to eat at Cachumba about 20 years ago, when it was more of a café with world music, brightly coloured walls and a bit of a militant political edginess, not just from the customers but from the staff as well! How things have changed, unlike your image in the thumbnail, which depicts it in its earlier incarnation.
Now its had a facelift not just to the decor, but to the menu as well. It still has the home cooked food vibe, with spiced dishes from around Asia and the Pacific rim, but it has a much more welcoming and cordial atmosphere. It now feels like a real destination eatery, for great value and interesting menu items, such as Sri Lankan fish curry, Vietnamese prawns and rice, Lamb on the bone slowly cooked with fenugreek and great soups and stews from Malaysia and northern India.
Its not a very big space and can get full quickly at the weekends, so book before you go. No draft beers but the wines are quite reasonably priced for their quality. A good place for a few friends with no plans to rush off, as the service can be a bit hit and miss when its busy.

With a great selection of restaurants available in West Didsbury, Cachumba certainly makes an impression with a short but delicious menu. With a combination of flavours from Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and other parts of South Asia, the menu had an eclectic mix of curries and meat dishes.
The decor was very pleasant with no jarring music which is so present in many Asian restaurants. The owners have succeeded in capturing the spirit of a a small beach cafe you would find on many of the beaches where there food clearly takes inspiration from.
The service was a tale of two halves: the waitress who took our order had very poor interpersonal skills and tried to convince us to get the 'Rice Plate' as the most expensive thing on the menu even though we explained we were students on a budget. She then seemed unsure what was still available on the menu when my partner order the lamb dish. However the waitress who brought us our food was charming and encouraging of our choice of dishes. The lamb turned out to be excellent with an unusual fusion of flavours. My red coconut curry was fabulous and was just the sort of thing you could imagine eating in a beach cafe on a Malaysian coastline.
In all I would highly recommend (especially the Sri Lankan lentils which were delicious) and will return.

Let me just get one thing straight, the waitress that was mentioned in an earlier thread is most definately not rude! Blunt and to the point, but not rude. I enjoy the no frills approach. Rant over...the food is deelish and ive never been disappointed. The portion sizes are good and the rice table option is really good value for money as there are so many dishes included in the price. My favourite has to be the keema peas...again just deeelish! Good wine too!
