Visited here last night.
We arrived into a busy restaurant on a Saturday night which was very nicely decorated. We were then met at the bottom of the stairs by a waiter who lacked a simple smile and welcome. He then pointed to table rather than show us to it, even TGI's have better welcome service than this...
That same waiter lacked politeness all night, the others that assisted him with drinks/food were nicer, so possibly just an unlucky chance that we got this waiter.
The menu was printed on a huge piece of cardboard that automatically got me thinking that this is a chain restaurant and not somewhere with individuality.
We tried the fish cakes & piri piri prawns to start & ordered some bread with oil & balsamic. The bread was dry french baguette, not fresh as you'd expect from a top restaurant in Manchester. The fishcakes were nice but lacking in quantity, 2 small Fishcakes to a portion that cost around £6. The mayo that came with them was also good. The prawns were that cheap rubber king prawns supplied my supermarkets, sauce was creamy & spicy and would've been a good sauce to enjoy with quality fresh prawns.
The choice on the mains was poor, pizza, burgers a few mains but no market dishes or specials at all..
So, We both went safe and had steaks, my wife had the fillet which was a nice thick cut, served with nice home cooked chips. I tried the T-Bone steak, which was slightly overcooked to medium, but I ate it anyway and didn't complain as the beef was still tender even though lacking in a pinkish colour.
The steaks were surely the saving grace before offering this place 1 or 2 stars.
Service ruined by 1 horrible waiter
Food average at best
Expensive for the standards of the food
Velvet restaurant was disappointing and shouldn't be one of the top restaurants in Manchester.
