“A bit shabby”
Reviewed November 26, 2012

Expensive drinks in the bar....I bought a double whiskey and coke and it cost me £10.70 which is absolutely extortionate and meant I only had the one and we then went out of the hotel to socialise instead of staying there which was a shame as it was raining.

The hotel is nice but nothing special and I would not be happy to pay more than £50 per head for the room. The rooms were nice with a nice seating area but the toilet made a horrendous noise when it was flushed which was reported but not sorted out while we were there, that was only one night though.

The rooms and bathrooms were not as clean as they could have been, our curtains had a large stain on, the skirting boards in the living area and the bathroom needed some serious attention and there was mould in the shower on the grout and the plastic soap tray...housekeeping could do with a bit of a kick up the bottom.

The bed however was massive and very very comfortable...a good nights sleep was had by us all but I've slept as well in a premier inn for a lot less money and had access to a bar that was a lot lot cheaper.

Stayed in Manchester recently at this hotel with two friends. We had Executive rooms on the higher floors - very good sized rooms, if a little dated looking. Mind had a Bose ipod docking station which was nice addition, the other room didn't. The bathroom was very large but the shower didn't have great pressure and the water couldn't be pursuaded to be anything above warm. But it was all very clean. The lobby area gets a bit busy and the bar is just a continuation of the lobby - good selection of drinks, though. Good to see Chase vodka and Williams gin. The building does somewhat resemble a converted office block - which it could be for all I know - so it's not exactly the most stylish place you could stay. But it did the job for us. My only gripe would be that wi-fi was restricted to the lobby unless you paid for it. Would probably stay here again - value was good.

Room Tip: Executive rooms don't cost much more but are significantly bigger and on the higher floors.

Well located hotel quite close to train station. Check out experience good and room was spotless and large with good views over City.
Evening meal was very good, and the staff excellent. Only negative point and I think a cheeky move from the hotel, they do recommend a wine as a"special" and it appears on the special board. I went for the sales pitch and enjoyed a glass of the recommended wine - to be charge nearly £10 for the pleasure - no price on the special board, but as other wines were around the £6 to £7 price range naively I thought it would be similar - should have asked!!
Breakfast first class - love the black pudding so much - order my own from McLeods on Stornaway.

Room Tip: Check the price of any wine they are promoting

Thank you for your review. I am pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay with us, and a first class Macdonald Breakfast. Thank you for bringing to my attention the issue you encountered in our Scottish Steak Club, we have made the necessary amendments to our 'Specials Board'. I hope to welcome you back again in the near future.

The hotel is ok and the gym and spa are good.

It does seem a bit dated, the room was big but then the TV was so far away from the bed and tiny by modern standards.

All in all a pretty good hotel but seems a bit dated and seems like hard work to get clean.

The BUT is, i don't like being lied to by check in staff. We were between meetings and traveled to this hotel early on Sunday morning. I knew it was before check in time but a lot of top hotels let you check in early if they have a room. At check in i was told my room was not available and check in was at 2. I asked the agent to call me when my room was ready which he said he would. 2.30 came and no call so i decided to check in again only to be told no room ready.

So, you are telling me from 8:30am until 2:30 pm you haven't checked anyone in to any rooms. It's a load of crap and an out right lie. That's a good enough reason not to use a hotel, when employees blatantly lie to customers. If he had said no i will not call you come back at 2 that would have been acceptable.

I think it's a good hotel though and good location and generally friendly.

Stayed for one night on a quick trip to Manchester. Check in was easy staff businesslike, but not overly welcoming.

The rooms look recently renovated and have all mod cons; flat screen TV, Bose dock, and really good quality furniture. The bathroom and shower were fantastic.

We had a meal as part of our stay which was really nice. Although the normal menu is really expensive we could have 2 courses up to a £20 limit, which did limit you quite a bit. Don't be fooled by the daily wine special, it cost about £6 a glass. All the drinks we had were very overpriced- which you kind of expect, but doesn't make it right! The restaurant staff where very friendly.

Breakfast was good quality, plenty of hot and cold options and fresh.

Check out was a bit painful as the lady got us mixed up with another room and actually took another payment, although we had pre-paid. I still don't think she believed us, although we are clearly not Italian!

I would say that apart from the restaurant the staff are who let this hotel down, perhaps it's a sign of poor management? Anyhow- a good overnight stop, and it serves its purpose.

Whilst the hotel is well placed if you're arriving by train, if you travel by car the satnav takes you to the pedestrian access at the front of the hotel (no car access). You are then stuck in a one way system travelling away from the hotel! The car park is at the rear of the hotel, unless you have directions it is difficult to find, and even then it so poorly sign posted I had to call reception twice to locate it. Once you are there the hotel is good. Rooms are big and well appointed, the bar was ok with a big screen tv showing the football. The gym is cramped with ageing equipment and no wifi and the lifts are slow and wobble around rather unnervingly. Overall it's pleasant enough but could do with some improved signage.
