“Tourist's and Shopper's Delight”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 20, 2013

I stayed in the Mercure recently and was impressed by the friendliness of the staff and the food, which for a city business hotel was a cut above the average, though possibly a little expensive.
Breakfast was a nice relaxed affair, although the lady restaurant manager did have an altercation with a female member of staff one morning, in the restaurant, when it should really have taken place behind closed doors.
Position wise, I doubt there is a better hotel in Manchester, the tram station is just outside the hotel so it is easy to get too tourist destinations such as the Science Museum, Media City (BBC's new home and site of the Lowrie Centre and Imperial War Museum) and the football stadiums. All the best shopping seems to be a stones throw from the hotel in places like the Arndale Centre and just 5 minutes walk down the road is Chinatown with plenty of nice looking restaurants.
I was pleasantly surprised by the number of visible policemen, something you don't normally get these days, and to a man (and woman) they all appeared to be in good humour despite the Christmas crowds and the weather.
And that was my only complaint about my 3 day break, the 3 days of rain, but that, I am assured, is par for the course in Manchester!!

Room Tip: Keep away from the lifts.

Booked a Thursday and Friday night at the hotel for my partner's birthday. Got a great 50% off rate with LastMinute.com so couldn't fault the price! We arrived mid afternoon to find the hotel car park jammed packed with delegate cars attending a conference until 5pm. This meant parking in the NCP car park for a few hours and moving the car later in the day, overnight price at the hotel car park £15 and managed to get a space eventually. Check in was swift and we were placed on the top 14th floor in an executive double. Although the room was a decent size and clean, can't help feeling slightly disappointed at it being a so called "executive" room. All the usual amenities expected from a 3* chain hotel. Clean bathroom and a comfy bed. Can't fault the comfort of the room just felt a little too business-like for my taste.

We didn't indulge in the breakfast and for room service breakfast we felt £17 was a little steep for a Continental. The hotel's in a perfect location for exploring the city, right on Piccadilly Gardens opposite a range of lovely bars and restaurants. Would highly recommend NYC Grill down the road for a perfect steak!! All in all a recommended hotel but if you prefer a bit of luxury perhaps push the budget and try a 4/5* instead.

My partner and i stayed here last night. we certainly cant complain. We went up for his birthday to watch the football. every thing was super our room, evening meal and breakfast. The staff were great. I paid a little extra for a superior room as an extra treat it was better than we both expected, spacious and light over looking Pccadilly Gardens. Also Great location for all the shops and resturants.

Room Tip: use trivago

Great location and ok hotel. Stayed in many better and indeed many worse mercure hotels but on the grand scale it's not bad.

Staff friendly. Comfortable beds. Basic bathroom if not a bit dated. But it's fine for what you need.

Avoided breakfast from a previous bad experience and just go to a local cafe for half the price round the corner

No WIFi in rooms on 12th floor. Available in the lobby Etc and public areas but there's a plug in cable for your laptop. Hmm no comments!

Quick check in and I will be back again.

Dear Guest

Many thanks for your review. Glad to hear that you found our location spot on and that you'll return at some point in the future. At that time, we should be up and running with WIFI throughout the whole hotel, including in the bedrooms. It would be good also to have the opportunity to restore your faith in us following a previous poor breakfast experience; I hope you do give us that chance.

Kind regards

Have stayed several times, and thought that on our latest stay that they had upped their game for the better. Staff were very helpful and amusing, nice to be served by someone that sounds happy, rather than a robotic staff member.

Stayed in December 2012 for 2 nights. Reception on the day I booked in could do with some training in talking to customers, seemed very pre-occupied as if it was an effort to book me in. Have stayed here many times before and rooms are a good size and clean with all the normal things you would expect. Dined in the restaurant on the first night and had a bar meal. I was quite surprised that I was charged a 10% service charge before I had my meal. I was told that it was because it was after 7pm! The meal was only average and the service was poor why would I want to give a gratuity? There are plenty of good restaurants that are close by and chinatown is only a 2 min walk away. The hotel is in a good location Ideal for shopping. Parking is £15.00 per night. I did have a good sleep so not all negative.

Dear Guest

Thank you for your review following your stay with us back in December. I was disappointed to read your feedback regarding your welcome on arrival and your experience in the Restaurant; please accept my apologies. Your feedback will be addressed accordingly. In addition, we do embrace Mercure's customer service programme 'Passion for Service' and regularly role out training sessions to the whole team. With this in mind, I will take the opportunity to use your feedback as an example of how such behaviour can impact on a guest's stay.

On a positive note, I am glad that our location works well for you and the hotel meet your needs. As you have stayed with us many times before, I do hope that your experience on this occasion will not deter you from visiting us again.

Many thanks once again for your constructive feedback.

Kind regards
David Daly
