“Nice hotel, good location”
Reviewed June 15, 2012 via mobile

The hotel is located overlooking Piccadilly Gardens in the centre of Manchester. Easy walking distance from Piccadilly railway station and near metro link tram stops. The northern quarter, china town, gay village are within very easy walking distance as is the Arnedale shopping centre. When you enter the hotel from street level you need to get into the lift for reception. Our room had views across Piccadilly Gardens.

We booked a standard room through a Hotels.com hot deal so the price we paid was great and offered great value for money. The rooms are basic, the hotel was clean and the staff were fine. The only downside was we could hear virtually everything said next door through the window frame for some reason. But for a 1 night stay in the centre of Manchester we got value for money.

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to post your review on Tripadvisor following your stay.

As you say our central location couldn't be any better for easily accessing all that Manchester has to offer. We are aware that sound proofing can be an issue with some of our bedrooms and we currently working on solutions on how we can improve this. My apologies for the disturbance you encountered on this occasion.

Thanks again and sometime in the future I hope we may have the opportunity to welcome you back.

Kind regards
David Daly

I was expecting more, not sure why however!

This hotel is housed in a rather old building. There is nothing that stands out at all about the lobby only that you have to drag yourself up a level and then further up for the bar and restaurant.

I had a room on level 12 which was near the top and a nice view over the shopping district however because of the very old style double panelling of the windows it was near impossible to see out because of condensation. The bed room was also very small with nowhere to even place my suitcase except on the floor, no stand had been provided and there was no wardrobe anywhere. The TV was very small and the whole room just felt cluttered, im relieved it was just myself in the room and I was not sharing. I also did not find the bed too be particularly comfortable.

The bathroom looks like something that was installed in the 50s, it really needed a bit of TLC and I found it frustrating that there was nowhere to plug in anything near the bed or even in the bathroom for a shaver.

The Tea and Coffee facilities however were appreciated.

I did have the breakfast the next morning which was acceptable however I do feel they could upgrade the standards of the food provided as I could have had a nicer breakfast in Mc Donalds!

Overall it was not a bad stay and for £50 a night it was definately a step up from the likes of the Brittania, Premier Inn, Novotel etc however I would be reluctant to pay much more for it, especially the £285 they were asking for a second nights stay!!!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room higher up

This Mercure, the intermediate brand of the Accor hotel chain, was until recently a Ramada. The rooms and baths were a little dated but apparently in the process of being upgraded. Facilities and amenities are business standard but unfortunately the prices for extra services are in a range reaching the absurd. I still do not understand how a hotel charging US$60-90 per night gives you internet access and local calls for free and others like this, charging US$140-200 per night ask you to pay daily rates for in-room internet or US$1.50 per minute for local mobile calls. Efficient check-in but lengthy elevators and check-out. Nevertheless, this hotel clearly enjoys a very convenient location and may be a good option for visiting Manchester if you do not find better rates at other comparable hotels in the area.

I stayed at this hotel for a one night shopping break. My twin room was on the 12th floor with a great view over manchester. The bedroom wasn't huge - but the bathroom was light and clean which is one of the most important things in a room for me.
The beds were comfortable, with a small wardrobe with nice hangers.
We got back to the hotel at just before midnight after going for a very nice meal at a restaurant called Australasia. Unfortunately the room was cold, the heating wasn't working and neither was the phone.
I went down to reception and the two gentlemen there could not have been more helpful. They offered for us to swap room - without having to repack, and we could collect our things from the original room in the morning. We took the option of an extra quilt each and a portable heater in the room which worked a treat. We were also given complimentary breakfast. I always think you can tell so much about a place by how they deal with things when they go wrong - and their response to our complaints was exceptional.
The breakfast was very good with fresh omlettes and eggs cooked to order. Delicious black pudding.
Every member of staff we came across at this hotel was cheerful and chatty. I have no hesitation in recommending it and will definitely be back. Great location for a few bars and a short walk to the shops. Worthy of a visit.

Dear Guest

Thank you for posting your review following your recent stay.

I was sorry to hear that when you arrived back at the Hotel after your meal out, you encountered maintenance issues in your bedroom. I agree with you completely, that it is totally down to how people react when things do go wrong and therefore to hear that my night team reacted in the way that they did and made arrangements completely to your satisfaction, was pleasing to hear.

I’m glad that you enjoyed your breakfast experience and it goes without saying, that I was delighted to hear you would have no hesitation in recommending us and that you will definitely be back.

Many thanks once again and we look forward to welcoming you back very soon.

Kind regards

On arrival at the hotel, it took us 40 minutes to check in, the queue was so long. It transpires that the management knew the hotel would be very busy for the two days of our stay, as they had brought the end of breakfast service and check-out times forward by one hour on the first morning of our stay. Why, then, did they not employ enough reception staff? The room was generally of a good standard, though the bed was not too comfortable, and the range of TV channels was very limited. Sound-proofing was little or non-existant, and we could clearly hear the telephone conversations of guests in the next room. The bathroom needed a little updating. There was no wi-fi, and the internet access was unreliable, though it cost £11.99 per 24 hours. Breakfast on our last morning was really chaotic as a result of the entrance to the restaurant being used by a very well attended conference - their delegates (and they were quite numerous) were being served hot drinks and bacon sandwiches in the guests' access to the restaurant. The sheer number of people present made for an uncomfortable experience for guests and delegates alike. The service in the restaurant that morning was very poor, and the insufficient number of staff were stretched beyond their capabilities. When returning to our car on check out, having paid £15 per night for parking, we found our car was blocked in by a member of staff. We had to report this at reception and wait for said member of staff to move her car. Apparently this 'backed-up parking' is common practice, which I find astonishing. It seems ludicrous for guests to have to wait to leave the car park and for staff to leave their duties to move cars. We chose this hotel for our stay, as we have always been satisfied with the higher end Accor hotels, but would not visit this hotel again, without assurance that the management makes better planning decisions.

Dear Guest

Thank you for your candid feedback following your stay with us. Please accept my apologies that we did not meet your expectations on this occasion and also for the inconvenience you encountered when you found your car blocked in, which I understand belonged to another guest, who had failed to leave their keys with us at Reception.

I would like to assure you that your experience is not reflective of our normally high standards of service and I do hope that sometime in the future we may have the chance to welcome you back and to have the opportunity to restore your faith in us. With this in mind, if you are ever heading our way again, please contact me personally when I would be delighted to assist with your accommodation arrangements.

Booked this hotel for Sat night as it seemed to get reasonable writeups and we wanted to be near enpough to the City stadium.
Overall I would say that the hotel was fine. The room was a good size, modern with good working heating/aircon. The furniture and bed was up to date. The matress was good and a good sleep was had by both. Breakfast was offered for £7.50 on arrival which was good value with the usual spread to help yourself to. We had the slightly better room which was only £10 more than the standard but at £175 for the night, I thought this was a bit steep........guess thems the prices these days in the city center.

Apart from the cost toi stay one night a short taxi run got us to the Coldplay concert and we walked back later on. The area has a lot going on with plenty of places to eat next to the hotel. Main shops are a few hundred yards away so for a one or two nighter right in the center I would it say works well.
