Owner description: The world's biggest and best football museum is open 7 days a week in Manchester city centre. The museum is free to enter, and tells the story of the beautiful game through the eyes of everyone from the players, the law-makers, and most importantly the fans.Exploring how football has impacted on and reflected English culture and society over 150 years, it brings stories to life with a range of interactive and hands-on displays. There are world-famous iconic objects including the ball from the 1966 World Cup final, Diego Maradona's famous 'Hand of God' shirt, and even the game's very first hand-written rule book. On top of that there are lots of chances to show off your skills from the penalty box to the commentary box, with a range of Football Plus+ experiences (charges apply - see website for details). The National Football Museum Hall of Fame, on the ground floors, is the official tribute to the game’s greatest players, teams and managers. Upstairs, you’ll find stories from inventing, expanding, following and playing the game. There’s also a Discovery Zone for under 5s, and Level 3 is dedicated to changing exhibitions exploring how art and culture exist alongside the beautiful game.

Well worth a visit if you come to Manchester. Football and none football alike, they have done a great job fitting the former urbis centre into the national museum with its slanting roof line. I would say with a little reading this museum can be completed in around 2 hours. Beware there are extras attraction inside which cost extra money and if you have children it my cost you a few quid to keep them happy with the interactive exhibits.

A good range of displays and interactive displays. The fact that is free is amazing, in a nice new modern building. The displays cover all competions and even includes femaile competitions.
A good cafe and toilet facilities also included in the building. Easy to find and access on public transport.

I visited the museum with my three children aged 10, 8 and 4 along with my parents. As a family of football fans we were excited to visit the museum solely dedicated to our favourite sport. When we arrived we were told that entry was free, however a £4 donation would be greatly received. I didn't have an issue with this. We visit lots of museums and leave a donation as it is vital these amazing places remain available and accessible to all. The lady proceeded to tell us about the interactive activities on level 2, to which the children became extremely excited and raced into the exhibit.
As we entered my eldest son saw the premiership trophy immediately wanted to stand with it. As he joined the queue it became apparent that we had to pay for this. With 3 children this wasn't an option, so we looked round and moved to the level 2 interactive activities. As we reached the level it then became clear that the majority of the interactive activities came with an additional fee, such as £5 to have three shots at the penalty wall (per child) All of the interactive games that would appeal to children were NOT FREE! My children we extremely disappointed. This 'museum' is not accessible to all and is out pricing a lot of families. I would rather they charged a set amount for entry and allow everyone to have a go at each of the activities. Very disappointing. This ruined our enjoyment of the other aspects of the exhibition as the children were so disapointed. Will not go again and will certainly not recommend to others. Such a wasted opportunity to share the history and fun of this working class sport with everyone.

Hi there,

Thanks for taking the time to add your review. We know taking a family trip out with 3 kids can be expensive, so I'm sorry you felt the charges for some of the activities here were unreasonable.

From your review we can see you understand how important it is for museums to be able to raise income via donations and commercial activities. As a charity we have to raise money where we can - and one of the ways we do this is via the 'Football Plus+' experiences at the museum, including the Penalty Shoot Out you mention. Across the 4 floors of displays, these are 7 physical interactives that provide the user with a photo, certificate or video to download at home. On the day you visited we also had the opportunity to get photos with the trophy you mentioned - an occasional extra we're trialling but one that has gone down well with many visitors so far (with a reduced price for those who have already bought Football Plus+ tickets).

When setting the museum up we were keen to speak to families about what they would like to see and do. Based on their feedback, we aim to get the balance right between these 7 activities that visitors can choose to pay extra for, and the presentation of the 2500 other objects and stories on display. As you'll hopefully have seen there are a variety of priceless and unique objects that we use to help tell the story of the game, and plenty of fun, free interactive games and displays too that children will enjoy. Our collection, and the video and audio displays we use to bring it to life, remains at the heart of the visitor experience. Elements like our immersive cinema, our Discovery Zone for under 5s and our changing exhibitions on the 3rd floor remain free for all to enter and enjoy (although of course a donation or the purchase of a £1 visitor guide is very welcome).

Football Plus+ is a fantastic and fun addition to the museum's core offer, but not everyone interested in 'sharing the history and fun of this working class sport' is able to or interested in taking part in the Football Plus+ activities. The technology to create and maintain these activities of course comes with a cost. Applying charges for those who choose to try our most costly exhibits helps ensure we keep the rest of the museum (the vast majority of what we offer) open and accessible to all.

We normally like to make sure these charges are communicated clearly by staff on arrival if a visitor is interested, so we must apologise if you made it to level 2 of the museum believing the 5 Football Plus+ activities on that floor would be free. We're reviewing our signage, communications and our ticket packages all the time, particularly for larger groups and families, so will take this feedback seriously.

Many thanks,
Adam

Visited this gem of a museum yesterday , what an absolute treat! Die-hard footy fans will love this place, so interesting and full of facts and figures about our national obsession . The staff were most helpful from the the moment we entered. A fabulously warm welcome as we walked thru the door ( free entry). So very knowledgeable and an absolute credit to the place (especially the guy at the front desk who used to work at Preston ). Currently there is a Football & Fashion exhibition being shown. Allow a good couple of hours to really see everything. Highly recommended 10/10
