“Feel-good luxury”
Reviewed January 10, 2010

This hotel is beautifully designed, comfortable and luxurious without being pretentiously posh. The things that stuck out for me: really comfy beds (actually comfier than home which is rare as we have a fab bed), bags already in the room when we checked in (we'd left our luggage in the hotel while we shopped), free DVD hire (current titles), 'real' i.e. pasturised milk for the tea and coffee making facilities, a teapot and mugs (rather than thimbles) and more than one teabag per person, lovely thick carpets. We did stay on an exceptionally cold night (-17) and the room was a little chilly but I think this was circumstance rather than the norm. There was only one minor niggle with the room which was that the iron and board we borrowed from reception were a bit crap and therefore not easy to use. We found the staff to be really helpful and the roof terrace was a nice touch (with plenty glasses available for you to use without having to ask). It felt like they were trying to create a feeling of you being at a home from home, with public spaces open all day so you could use them whenever you wanted.

The only thing that gave the stay a rather surreal edge was that we arrived back at the hotel at 1am and thought we'd have a drink on the roof before going to bed. It was a bit of a shock to find two guests having sex in the hot tub and sufficiently inebriated not to care that four people had just walked in on them. The staff dealt with this promptly (there is a HUGE CCTV camera just above the hot tub!). Needless to say, we weren't tempted to use the hot tub after that! It wouldn't put me off staying there again but I was thankful that it wasn't my mother who walked in on them!

I got married at this venue back in August. This hotel was simply amazing and exceeded all expectations. The guests loved it, and are still speaking about it months later!
Particular praise has to be given to the staff, as the service was on a level I have never experienced. They went above and beyond throughout the day, and made it such a special day. If any staff get to read this - thank you very much for helping make this day so special.

I would fully recommend this venue to anyone who is thinking of getting married, having a party or simply looking to treat their partner!

Simply perfect in everyway.

Tucked away in Manchester City Centre is this lovely luxurious, elegant but friendly hotel. A fantastic place to check in and drop off - you could just make the most of your fab room or sit in the lounge bar and snack and drink .... fabulous service and cosy atmosphere. If you like the style of Malmaison, you will love this hotel.

If instead you want to start off a party weekend by drinks in this bar and then head off into the city, it is the perfect location to come back to after a hard night!

On the practical side, everywhere is spotlessly clean and everything you need is at your fingertips.

A mention to Lucas and Paulina.

I really wanted to love this hotel. It was recommended by a friend and we were so excited to stay there. The room was undeniably gorgeous - old books everywhere, a gorgeous mezzanine bathroom, good powerful shower, reasonably comfy bed and some cool evidence of the old architecture of the building.

Some things were just a bit...off...though. I didn't realise anywhere still charged for WiFi, especially places that charge as much per night. Also when asked "Would you like a paper in the morning?" on check in, does anyone then expect to be charged for the paper on check out? We were amazed. And I know this is a really pathetic trip advisor style gripe, but the pen in the room was just a rubbish bic which seemed to sum up the hotel's general miserlyness (?) in some areas.

So it's very pretty, the on-street parking is free on a Sunday and the Giraffe just round the corner is mighty fine on a hangover but the little touches were missing and that made me sad.

Have always wanted to stay here but the very high prices have always meant we couldn't. however on this visit to manchester we decided to stay on a sunday instead of saturday which combined with booking late meant a bargain rate. We booked the "Sunday School" offer which was £90 room and breakfast in a Baby Grand room. On arrival they upgraded us to the next size room which would've been £255 room only if we'd had to pay the full rate. BARGAIN!!!!
The room was fantastic with a huge roll top bath on the mezzanine floor. Bar and breakfast area are beautiful and breakfast very good.
Hot tub on the roof looked good but with the wind and rain we gave it a miss!
All in all a very good stay and the location near Spinningfields is a great area to stay in.
Was torn on how to rate value for money but went for 4 out of 5. We got excellent value but I would not pay the rack rate as that just seems far too high.
Would certainly go back again- if the price was in line again with the other good hotels in Manchester like City Inn. V&A, Crowne Plaza and Radisson.

We stayed at Great John Street hotel as part of our Silver Wedding Anniversary Celebrations which is the second time we have stayed at the hotel.
The service from the Staff Team their was excellent and to be honest I could not find fault at all with anything.
We stayed in Room 22 which was great, the bed was downstairs with a sofa / settee & bathroom upsatairs - all nicely decorated and set out. Both floors had a TV / CD player with acess to a number of the satalite stations with coffee / tea making facilites also.
Food - we had a late tea and breakfast both days / nights - was very good with nice friendly service
The bar area is very plush and again very good friendly service - nothing too much troule
Their are Great views from the roof top and we did go in the hot tub until 3.30am on one of the nights.
The Hotel is situated next to Granada Studios and is a 10 to 15 min walk from the City Centre. We took a taxi into town which cost about £4.
I would best descrbe our experience of Great John Street as perfect, everybody is very friendly, nothing is too much for anybody and would have no hesistation in recomending this hotel as a place to stay - it was a great way to end our Silver Anniversary "year" and will go back definately next year at some point
Thanks

Paul & Lorriane
