“Great Wedding Location.....with downsides!!”
Reviewed May 1, 2012

Our daughters wedding was held here in March and although the wedding coordinator was fantastic in every respect as was the actual designated area for the ceremony and reception. However, the accommodation is not that good...Apart from being very expensive, the Penthouse suites are tacky. Plug access to use electrical appliances near the dressing tables poorly designed, bathrooms need attention in shower ares and generally the rooms were not clean.
Although the prices are high, no breakfast is included (charged separately), car parking not included for residents (charged separately) and the quality of the reception staff needs addressing.
Generally the hotel is at best reasonable. Charges are very high and do not reflect the general quality of the accommodation.
Overall we had an excellent wedding day and as stated previously this was due to the actual area for the ceremony and reception. Well done to the wedding coordinator.

Room Tip: Check your room before unpacking.

Thank you for taking the time to pass on your review. I am delighted to hear your daughter had such a wonderful wedding and I have passed on your comments to "the wedding Co-ordinator" - Sam.

It is unfortunate that your review focuses mainly on the perceived negatives of the Penthouse apartments as in the main they do recieve favourable comments which is demonstrated by most of the comments on this website. I have however discussed the cleanliness and staffing issues with my team and I can assure you this has been taken very seriously.

Regarding the rates charged, your apartment was booked on a preferential wedding rate which was very heavily discounted and the option for breakfast was available for a very reasonable £5 per person supplement.

Thank you once again for taking the time to pass on your review and If you wish to stay at the hotel again in the future, please contact me direct at the hotel and I will personally make the necessary arrangements.

As a celebration of Victorian architecture, hard graft and quality workmanship, The Place shows the way in combining preservation and functionality, weaving the past and the future together, blending the old and the new, in a respectful and forward-looking fashion. This impressive 9 storey high skeleton of massive cast iron columns, wrought iron box girders and curving brick arched ceilings has been skilfully softened with fabrics and furnishings and tastefully transformed into an imposing but welcoming 'home from home'. We were upgraded to a larger apartment but all the apartments have acres of space, are well appointed and furnished to a high standard with all the essentials you would expect. The staff were genuinely warm, friendly and professional, appearing to really revel in working in such a distinctive and characterful building. Located in the heart of the city, you are ideally placed to enjoy some shopping, sample the various restaurants and take in the cultural and musical highlights.

If you like something a little bit different, with a helping of history and heritage, I would highly recommend The Place.

The Place is located 2 minutes from Manchester Piccadilly, making it very convenient for commuters. It is absolutely massive, with an atrium that looks like a designer prison complete with decaying palm trees. The smallish gym has cardio exercise equipment only (running machines, bikes, rowing etc), no weight-training equipment. However, for those who want more, there's a fully-equipped gym just across the road.

My colleagues and I were upgraded to two-bedroom apartments, which meant we each had two bedrooms, three double beds, two en-suite bathrooms, two walk-in wardrobes and three flatscreen televisions. There are washer-dryers and ironing boards in every apartment.

Having so much space that you could rollerskate around your apartment may seem excessive, but the great thing about The Place is that - unlike almost every hotel we've stayed in in Manchester - you hardly ever hear your neighbours. Staying in hotel rooms where you can hear your neighbours' every move can be amazingly stressful after a long day in the office; by contrast, at The Place you can shut the door behind you, kick your shoes off and be yourself for as long as you like.

Wifi is included and available throughout The Place, although the connection drops regularly - meaning you have to continue clicking on the terms and conditions screen for access. On mobiles, the text link for accepting their terms and conditions for wifi is minute and placed right above an irritating banner ad, instead of simply a large button.

We also had a living room with a dining table seating eight people and a fully-equipped kitchen. Having a kitchen is great, because we are all away from home during the week for months on end. Being able to cook your own meals means that you can stick to a regular diet (particularly as some of us have food allergies, which can be tricky in restaurants).

The next week we were given 'normal' one-bedroom apartments, which were still more spacious than our own homes. The wooden floors are showing clear signs of wear and tear - and creak a lot -, but that just adds to the lived-in comfiness. The layout of the rooms can be a bit odd in all rooms we've stayed in so far, with doors that open into beds and little space to get a large suitcase into the room and over the bed to the wardrobe. But beds are comfortable and a good night sleep is feasible.

Food at The Place is a bit hit and miss (particulary portion sizes: two colleagues had very different sized fish and chips on consecutive nights - even allowing for nature), but generally very acceptable. If you don't feel like cooking or going out, room service or dinner in the lounge or restaurant are a perfectly adequate alternative - which is a compliment. The main restaurant can feel cavernous, but staff are happy to serve food wherever else you want to sit in the bar or lounge area. Breakfast is the standard buffet stuff and absolutely fine; one day I hope to have time to sample the made-to-order breakfast extras.

Staff are friendly and helpful without the artificial gloss you find in some hotel chains. If there's a problem, they can be reassuringly pragmatic in finding a solution. The loyalty scheme is straightforward and generous (free upgrade after 7 nights, free night in a penthouse apartment after 10 nights etc).

My colleagues and I have had to push hard against our company's travel policy to stay in an apartment hotel rather than in a regular hotel, but The Place for us is a real home-from-home. Having tried a variety of suggested hotels in Manchester, we have now booked into The Place for a foreseeable future - and feel much more relaxed already.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on one of the higher floors, because they are quieter.

Myself and work colleague booked a 2 bed apartment for a night out. it was a few minutes walk away from the station and very easy to find. Upon arrival we were upgraded to an exec 2 bedroom apartment. The apartment was lovely, nicely laid out and clean. Think the only thing i would change about it is to upgrade the heating/AC and the bathrooms could be a little higher spec, and the walls are very thin!! but aside from that i think this place is very good value for money. Much nicer having a sitting room and more space. The check in staff were very friendly. The beds were comfy.

If i were coming to manchester again with friends i would stay here. probably wouldn't consider it for a romantic break, but for city centre exploring this place is perfect.

The Place is an amazing converted warehouse. There's a huge central atrium which allows light to flood the area, huge iron pillars and beams criss-cross the structure and if you appreciate Victorian industrial architecture or warehouse-loft styling then this is a treat.

However this open centre is a little double-edged in that some of the apartments have bedrooms opening onto the area and there's simply not enough light-proofing. Also since there is no sound deadening (baffles on the ceilings in the walkways might help) rowdy parties may keep you awake!

Sadly the penthouse apartments are compromised by architectural vision - no proper guttering means that rain hammers down onto the part-glazed ceilings of bedrooms; more privacy though and if it doesn't rain then you won't need earplugs. Oh, and the penthouses get a special glass elevator on the outside.

Despite these points I recommend The Place. It's well located for walking into town, the apartments are well equipped with full kitchens and plenty of bathrooms, the staff unfailingly pleasant and helpful.

The Place totally shines when you get a corner apartment: outside-facing windows so fresh air in every room, dark curtains, quite a bit more space, and no windows onto the sometimes noisy atrium.

Secure parking and a buffet breakfast add to the whole package and I rather like it.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a corner room if you're going to need more than one bedroom.

I got this on a lastminute deal and was very impressed. Its two minutes from the train station and close to the Northern Quarter. We had a sitting room, dining table and kitchen with all the things you need if you didnt want to pay to go to a restuarant. I did think the apartment could have been laid out better as it was a bit of a rabbit warren, and the noise from the event on the first floor was a little loud - but that did stop at 1am. You can get the breakfast for 7 pounds if you ask for it when you check in, and it was pretty good. They had hot and cold food, but was a little disappointed when they ran out of the pastries :)

Its a good place to stay for things like stag/hen dos or any kind of groups going on a night out. I wouldnt pay full price but the deal I got was excellent!

Room Tip: Try to get an apartment on an upper level because the noise from the events on the first floor could...

Stayed here for a family trip to the Girand National. Five adults stayed two nights. The appartment was huge two bedrooms both en suite with a tv in each and a fine kitchen and lounge area. Secure and in a great location. Only downside was the appartments had no air conditioning and were extremely warm so you may need to get a few fans for the night. Overall way better than any hotel I stayed in Manchester but you will need at least four people to make it worthwhile as it will cost you a more than a hotel but well worth it.
