“The proverbial hidden gem”
Reviewed August 21, 2013

Unfortunately most of the site is out of bounds due to the fact that it is still a functioning school for extremely talented musicians, however you can get a sense of the atmosphere of the place as you make your way to the library.
The library itself is stunning and just reeks of history and it is hard to believe you are literally yards away from Victoria station. When you leave the library make sure you turn left to go towards the exit as you get to see more of the building and I even saw a small group of students being taught the piano in a beautiful hall / classroom. This place needs more reviews to ensure that it ranks towards the top 5 of things to do in Manchester. If you do go make sure you add a review for it.

“It doesn't get more medieval than this”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

Forget Harry Potter... this is the real thing. The library is astonishing in its age and pristine state. This should be on everyone's list of things to do before they die.

Getting in isn't the easiest thing, but it is free. It is housed in the oldest building in Manchester (1400s) and it shows. It is just next to the Cathedral, which is worth a visit too. You need to find the main entrance to the school and explain to the security guard that you want to visit the library. They will gladly let you through and guide you the door. Here you must ring the bell. An enthusiastic librarian will open up and let you in. Keep that camera going. An original printing of Principia Mathematica and thousands of ancient books line locked coves.

Combine your visit with a lunch time listen to the music students of the college. They're amazing and have regular recitals.

“Not just the books!!”
Reviewed March 10, 2013

We were lucky enough to spend a day in Manchester - going for two specific 'visits' - the Town Hall and Chethams Library.
Neither visit disappointed - and this little library really is a hidden gem!
Bookcases, books, pictures, furniture, and the little pamphlets - they all absolutely 'reek' of history. The staff members that we saw were friendly, courteous and helpful - there is such a feeling of peace and contemplation about the place, it is easy to imagine all the scholars that have spent hours there either studying or gazing out of the bay window, e.g. Karl Marx.
If you go to Manchester, make the effort to find the library - set in a beautiful building - it is well worth the searcht. Oh, and it is pronounced 'Cheethams' - just in case you need to ask it's whereabouts!
