I went to Umezushi for the umteenth time last night, i live 25 metres away so end up there more often than is normal, and realised I'd never reviewed the place.
The food was, as always, faultless, service was friendly and efficient, the decor is simple and I love the bench seating. Having to wait for the chefs to prepare the food is surely a good thing, having to pay the price to have the finest freshest fish ishouldn't be a problem. There are enough conveyor belt places if you want cheap(ish), bland fish and overpoweringly flavoured sauces to scoff at 100 miles an hour.
I ate at Umezushi in its opening week and was amazed how good it was and it's still delivering the same quality now.

Umezushi means plum. This tiny restaurant is plum in the middle of nowhere, under the arches, a stone's throw from Victoria Station, but well worth making the effort to find. Best to make a reservation for dinner. If you like chains, like Yo Sushi or the flashy Sapporo Teppanyaki (average food, braying customers, chefs who lob food at you as part of the entertainment) this place is not for you. But if you have been to Tokyo or Taiwan ( the owner is Taiwanese), or just love Japanese food, go and enjoy some authentic ( honmono no) flavours. Taiwanese pork rice, vegetable tempura with sublime, light, crisp batter, black cod are all Umezushi's specialties. They serve interesting beers ( we had Japanese beer from a Belgian producer), best with this sort of cuisine, or saki,or wine, or (brown rice) tea; the latter is my preference. The chefs prepare the food with passion and care. Front of house staff are pleasant and informed. Sometimes they are slow or forgetful ( we had to ask twice for a glass of water ) but they know about the food and are committed to the place and its cuisine. It deserves to have a regular clientele. We will certainly keep going back. Expect to pay about £50 for two without drinks.

have just got back from our second visit to Umezushi and I have got to say the evening menu is SO much better than the lunchtime one.

Because this was our first time with the main menu we ordered a sashimi platter and a sushi platter between the 2 of us, to try them out. They were both not only beautifully fresh and tasty but also put together like works of art.

To be honest we were full after that, but we greedily ordered the razor clams with chilli and garlic, mainly because we hadn't had them before. Again they came promptly and were lovely, but to be honest we were full by then anyway. Thanks to Terry and his staff, we had a lovely trip, and we will definitely visit again.....I want to try the tempura next time!

So I have heard a lot about this place and have wanted to go for a while.
I love sushi and have eaten it all over.
I walked in with the Mrs on a Saturday afternoon, there was a guy sat on his own eating razor clam sashimi......i knew instantly that I was in for a treat.

I have to say that if your only experience of sushi is Pret a Manger or Yo Sushi - and your expectations are to eat a truck load of rice heavy nigiri - this place will disappoint.

It is a high end refined sushi place which will empty your wallet and may not guarantee you to leave stuffed to the rafters.

What it will do is offer your the sushi favorities but also sushi presented in a way that you will not have seen anywhere else in Manchester.

It will also offer dishes that are not on offer anywhere else in the city.
we worked our way through the menu which changes daily based on what ever the chef could purchase that day at the market.

High points were the razor clam and scallop sashimi dishes. Teryaki mushrooms also good
Service excellent - design and feel of the place great - like a modern - no gimic - visible cooking / chef temple for sushi / japanese food worship.

Enjoy xx

I can hardly think of a place other than this when it comes to sushi. The quality of the food is excellent and the preparation impeccable. All is made in front of you, not behind a wall or in a hidden kitchen, so you can appreciate all the care and attention that is payed to the food you are going to it. It is definitely worth to also mention the friendliness of the staff, which makes you really feel "at home". Last but not least excellent choice of music too! :-)
