“Excellent”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2012

I was staying at the Upper Brook Street Travelodge on business with some colleagues and we needed somewhere for an evening meal. The Cafe Bar didn't look very exciting so we ventured out looking for a restaurant. And stumbled upon Petra less than 5 minutes walk away (turn left out of the Travelodge and Petra is just the other side of the garage).

We had a very pleasant evening with some wonderful food. The Kefta I had as a main was very nicely flavoured with a generous portion. I'd ordered the fired rice/vermicelli as a side which made a perfect accompaniment. One of my colleagues had the mixed grill kebab and he commented how nice that was.

Leave room for desserts. Not huge portions but boy-oh-boy are they rich.

Petra is now firmly implemented as somewhere to eat out in Manchester next time I'm there.

It's worth noting, something we didn't, that they don't have an alcohol licence but are happy for you to take you own wine. There's a Tesco Express next door at the petrol station.

“Middle Eastern food in Manchester”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 15, 2012

We were recomended to vist this restaurant by a friend.
Expecting Jordanian culture and food we were pleasantly suprised to find it is run by a Syrian family. The service was very good with ample time to review the menu and helpful advice given by the waiter serving us. The dishes arrived, just as we ordered with plentiful supplies of bread etc. The food was well presented and full of flavour as freshly prepared and well presented.
We had time to review our orders as we were able to make them between courses and did not feel hurried. Whilst in common with most Middle Eastern resaurants they do not serve wine the charge for corkage is on £1- and the typical Yoghurts etc available were more than enough to make the meal go well.
The clientele were mainly familly groups including children and they made them most welcome.\
Would like to go again.

“Syrian cuisine: the real thing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2012

We have been eating regularly for several years at this wonderful Syrian restaurant near the universities/main hospitals of Manchester. Often we take friends who never fail to love it. Apart from the very friendly, helpful and efficient staff and the nice atmosphere (Petra is patronised by lots of people/families from the middle east) the food is truly excellent and very good value - of a very much higher standard than many restaurants serving this type of cuisine. The wide range of hot and cold starters will bowl you over: don't miss the exquisite cheese bourak, the exceptional babaganoush dip, the chicken wings and the lamb kibbeh (amongst others!). As a result, we often only have room for one main dish. Try, for example, the 'slab' of rice decked with slices of aubergine and lamb. Plenty of dishes too for vegetarians. They also serve wonderful home made desserts. Round it all off with genuine mint tea. Sharing these lovely dishes with your friends/family will make you very pleased and very happy!

They only serve one or two wines and a couple of different beers but you can take your own wine for a nominal corkage charge. Worth booking in advance because it's popular and sometimes there are small parties there; other times it can be quiet -you never know. Only open in the evenings apart from Sunday lunch. You won't be disappointed!
