“Excellenct place, excellent food, excellent cocktails but poor service!”
Reviewed June 1, 2014 via mobile

This place is so quirky and quaint it offers a brilliant, relaxed atmosphere. The staff all have a warm and pleasant manner and make you feel very welcome. The gin cocktails are amazing (I would recommend the cherry kiss and vimto smile). The food was also lovely I had the crab starter and my mother in law and partner also had the croquettes. The main was also delicious, simple yet flavoursome sausage and mash, an the portion was plenty big enough which gave excellent value for money!

My only downside is the service. I know I have previously mentioned how warm and friendly the staff are, but, they aren't very fast to serve. We had made a waiter aware we were ready to order and he left us for 20 minutes. My father in law had to go to the bar and ask for a waiter to see to us. When a waitress finally come over (petite long dark hair in a crimped style who was lovely) made us aware that the waiter had forgotten about us. The place was hardly busy with approximately 5 tables in including ourselves. When we made the reservation we were made aware that we had to be done in an hour in a half due to being so busy, which was fine as we were off to the theatre, but the service didn't represent this. We were constantly having to chase staff for simple things such as drinks missing from orders and waiting a long time for them, for simple things such as a glass of tap water. I understand it must have been difficult, as one guy was rushed off his feet making cocktails, but then all the other staff are stood around talking in the back room and not really serving customers, which coming from a customer service back ground is my pet hate as I think it portrays a bad image to customers. We then placed an order for a desert which we waited 45 minutes for which by this point we had been there for 2 and a half hours and were becoming bored of waiting and were getting close to the start time of the show we were off to see. At this point we then had to cancel the desert order because we had simply ran out of time and assumed service would have been quicker after being made aware of the time allocation on the table originally given. The waiter also agreed that the time we had waited for a desert was ridiculous and in a good will gesture knocked part of the drinks off the bill which was much appreciated but unfortunately doesn't make you forget about the length of time being left to wait.

Overall a lovely experience and would recommend it to anyone, they just seen to improve on simple service skills to enrich the customer experience, however I will be visiting again for the cocktails and the great atmosphere!

“Hidden Gem”
Reviewed May 23, 2014

Think I've found a hidden gem with the Whim Wham Cafe. Went last night and was happy to discover they've just launched a new menu. Delicate croquetes, keggeree fritters, pearl barley & roast fennel salads and they were just the starters. Food was delicious and well crafted, bringing traditional british into the modern age by adding freshness and recognising the existence of vegetarians! Oh and the cocktails were pretty fabulous too.

“A great range if cocktails”

Just had a fantastic margarita and great meal. Ace music and atmosphere. They play Jazz and blues music and it has the feeling of a speakeasy. Great work guys

“News years balls-up”
Reviewed May 11, 2014 via mobile

First time, went for NYE with girlfriend... never again:
Pros:
+ Food decent and fairly interesting;
+ Live piano player/crooner;
+ Waiter wore a pocket watch;
+ Local business, unique 50s kitsch interior.

Cons:
- Sat by window with coats on because temperature was clearly below acceptable restaurant standards;
- Eventually asked for drinks order 20mins after being seated;
- asked to move because of cold. Got moved to another window seat, equally cold. Coats still on.
- Got asked for food order about 30mins after being RE-seated. Witnessed a couple walking out because of similar delay.
- waitress was unwelcoming, seemed put-out when we requested service
- live music didn't get started till just before we were leaving about 22:00. No atmosphere till then.
- Clearly under staffed for NYE... but not really that busy.
- girlfriend unhappy.
- with the above considered, food was over priced and pretentious.
- they DONT respond to feedback... If you scroll down comments on Trip Advisor someone else complains about heating the previous year, and they promise to fix it. Epic fail.

It's was new years for christ sake!

“Excellent food and overall experience”
Reviewed May 4, 2014

If you can get past the unusual decor, that in the cold light of day is somewhat 'strange' (no offence intended - all a matter of taste) - this is a great little place right in the heart of everything. We went for a pre theatre meal and drinks - intrigued by the 'Gin Palace' sign and website. Food was very good - we are both veggies and it is very hard to find good quality food that suits us - the menu is quality rather than quantity, but what we had (2 courses for £14) was excellent. The cocktails are expensive - but well worth it - very delicious! Unfortunately couldn't stay later but would think that later in the evening with live music this place must be even better.
