Travelled with my wife to stay at this hotel on a David Urquhart coach tour. Apprehensive after reading many of the other trip adviser reviews, but was pleasantly surprised and we both enjoyed our visit. Firstly , being called an Airport Hotel gave a wrong impression of what we found and most other people staying there were actually using it as a base to explore further afield.
The hotel is situated just off the motorway, yet close to many large gardened houses, but has many attractions in easy walking distance of it, including Wythenshawe Hall Park (just 4 minutes to first entrance), Northenden Riverside Park, the Trans - Pennine walk for miles along river bank and Chorlton Water Park. Could easily spend a day if weather good just walking out from hotel.
Now the Britannia Hotel itself is obviously quite budget, but our room on seventh floor had almost been completely refurbished, having a completely new bathroom, new beds and mattresses and redecorated throughout. Let down was really only the radiator, as this remained in a very poor state with all the paint literally peeling off - perhaps an indication of the state of our room previously- and surely the heating system throughout hotel is next in line for replacement. Carpet had been shampooed clean, but being light oatmeal in colour it still showed many stains and marks. However, room large and comfortable and we slept well with no noise at night apparent despite facing road, so no complaint here.
There were three lifts up to all floors and we found no difficulties in using them at any time, albeit busy on our last morning with so many people leaving. Only problem noted here though was that the areas to front of the lifts were always grubby, as were the floor grills of lifts - why?, as hotel itself was maintained otherwise quite clean, except for large pedestals of tables in dining room which were also neglected.
Dining room was on small side for number of guests and so meal times were a bit "hit and miss", if you didn't go in for a seat early, and there were a regular shortages of some foods. Annoying that such a small hot water urn for tea and I'm sure this will soon be resolved as time consuming for staff to keep refilling. Food was ok, not 4*, but we weren't paying other than budget price.
Had no complaints about staff either. Quite a range of different accents between them, but they were all helpful, courteous, polite and appeared to well earn their pay. Bar staff very efficient too, compared to other recent hotels - they made serving two or three people together appear easy.
So in summary what do I think. Well, this is a budget hotel and providing only budget prices are being paid to stay there, should be not too many reasons for complaint. Everything was not ideal, but much better than expected. May have been lucky with room, from other reviews, but I
would be happy to stay there again at price paid.
