“really nice pub”
Reviewed October 28, 2012

had to mark this place down to 'average' just because the food wasn't quite up to scratch. Had beef rib pie and was a little chewy and quality of gravy inside not great. Having said that, loved the style of pub, great service. Would give the food another chance on a different day and order something different before judging too harshly. Nice atmosphere in great location in city centre. Had to wait half an hour for a table but not a problem as pub nice a cosy (small but has tables outside also)

Yes ill be returning :-)

“Give it some Welly !”
Reviewed October 28, 2012

Excellent piece of history offering good grub and real ales.
This be another Nicholsons establishment, but, unlike other such - from our experience - it has numbered tables ! Also, because of its popularity, you cannot just walk in and take a dining table / seat - this be upstairs on two floors - including the roofspace ! Upon entering, you need to ask an assistant if there be any such places available. Depending on time of day - the chances are you will have to wait a while downstairs - drowning your sorrows ! Could be worse - they could just sell the usual bog standard buy anywhere beers - not here - they usually have three or four real ales to chose from.
That said, service was excellent - and rewarded (£) !
Niggles ? well, yes - our first visit to the 'new' Old Welly - 05 / 2003 - was delightful. Good beers - as ever, plus - Beef Wellington - on the menu. The current menu be identical to all other Nicholsons - no complaint, but, Beef Wellington at the Old Wellington should be standard fayre methinks. Mitchells and Butlers were then the owners.
Also, under M&B, souvenir menus including a potted history about this tourist attraction were available - no longer alas.

“Unbelievable value”
Reviewed October 11, 2012

My wife and I called in for e meal miidweek early evening on the way back to Viictoria Station after a shopping trip.We had the 2 courses for £9.95 and a bottle of Red . The crispy calamari was excellent and the sausage and mash very satisfying.. Can't remember which wine we had but for £12.95 a bottle it was very good.Service was excellent ,nothing too much trouble, like replacing a wine glass trhat had an old lipstick mark on it,an all too common occurence these days. All in all a great value meal.

“Terrible Service”
Reviewed October 1, 2012

The Old Wellington used to be a favourite restaurant for me, but will not return and I strongly suggest people to reconsider before going there.

Food is very good but waiting staff not that good. I had a reservation in place but still was late for dinner due to Manchester Traffic - I had a bad approach from staff there due to this and the head waiter asked me to limit my order to a single course, I ordered side bread and butter for 3 persons we got 2 slices of brown bread ( as this is Nicholsons Standard as per management there ), no desert could be offered as the kitchen closed down while we had our main course.

Investment in staff training should take place as its a shame that the reputation goes down due to this.
