Although a little expensive compared to similar hotels, this Novotel is clean and well-designed. The rooms are spacious and well-equipped. I particularly liked the design of the bathroom (bath and two types of shower head). The staff were all friendly and efficient. City centre location is a bonus - close to lots of attractions and nightlife.

I had actually arrived at the hotel earlier than 2pm for check in. This wasnt a problem for the hotel the room was ready in 10 minutes, I cant remember the name of the guy at reception but he was really polite, and helpful with my queries.
My room couldnt find dust anywhere, very clean, there were 2 extra pillows in the cupboard and a few more on the bed. The bathroom and shower facilities excellent and brightly lit.
The actual location was super convenient places you could walk to places such as china town or the centre of town in 5 to 10 minutes.
For a city centre location it was really quiet at night so enjoyed a good nights sleep, the bed was really comfy

I traveled to Manchester to attend a conference and the Novotel was my choice both for location and budget and I wasn't disappointed one bit with this hotel.

The rooms have a very decent size, so do the bathrooms. My room had both a pretty comfy double-bed and a couch, plus a proper working area. As a business traveler I was a bit disappointed that free WiFi was only available in the lobby and you could only purchase wired internet in a package together with pay-tv at roughly GBP 10 a night. Fortunately 3G reception in my room was good, so no need to worry about the internet charges.

The location of the hotel is truly excellent, you are in perfect walking distance to Manchester Oxford Road Rail Station, giving you a quick and convenient connection to the airport.

The city center with all the restaurants, entertainment & shopping you'd care for really starts pretty much behind the hotel and within about 10-15 minute walk you reach all the major sights.

Having stated some 2 months ago that "in staying at a Novotel - you always knew what the lamp shades were like", crossing the Pennines to Lancashire proved that Novotel are updating their style (whether you like it is a matter of personal opinion). The double door has gone, but not the seperate toilet, new bed side lamps and finally a walk in shower - much safer. Beds in Novotel are firm- although in this case my side of the bed had suffered some damage - a guest sitting on the edge I guess - pity when there is a 2 seater settee. Modern TV & tea making facilities. We paid £69 including a good breakfast, with a central quiet location on a weekday night - what more can you want.. Staff very helpful & able to leave our baggage there on check out for the day.

Very close to the Metro tram at St Peter's Sq (which will take you to the Lowry & the Northern Imperial War Museum), We had a taxi from Piccadilly Railway station - we had no idea how to exit the station! However, it is only 80p on the tram from St Peter's Sq to the station and Dickenson Street runs off St Peter's Square.

Following the recommendation of Lonely Planet we went to the Yang Sing restaurant on Princess St for an excellent evening meal - China town being only some 100m away from the hotel's "back door".

We stayed for one night, in interconnecting rooms so that our two small children could have a room of their own. It was perfect, cot provided, toys given at reception, clean room with very comfortable beds and great bathrooms, all very good value. The best thing was that we were able to book the interconnecting rooms by phoning the hotel directly but while still being able to benefit from their best available rate - other chains wouldn't let us do this - we had to either take a chance on a non-cancellable cheap rate online and have no guarantee of interconnecting rooms, or book the full rate. All in all, brilliant, just what we were after, would definitely stay there again.

PRO:
Perfect location for bars, nightclubs and restaurants
(best chinese - Yang Sing - just around the corner)
Good "Executive Room" - varied & healthy breakfast

CONs:
Terrible "standard room" (noisy fourth floor currently under renovation)
Breakfast ends at 10.00 am sharp: don't wake up too late !
Beware of not-so-free internet access with your Executive Room

THE STORY
I went to Manchester for a shopping/nightlife extended weekend (5 days).
This Novotel is really well situated, 50m from Metrolink, in front of bus and taxi lines.
Walking distance from Chinatown, the Village and UMIST.

I booked a "standard room" but I was so disapointed by its cheap, old and dull deco (can be compared to an american motel of the 80's). I asked and paid an extra to head to their "Executive Room": the minimum you should decently expect from a Novotel worldwide. If you are still tempted by their standard room, I would advice you to save your money and head to the adjacent IBIS HOTEL.

My new choice, "Executive Room", was not bigger, but have several little interesting "extras": Nespresso coffee machine (and superb chocolatey bar), one bathrobe (to share when you're two?), sleepers, bath salts, a nice BOSE sound dock to play your music loud (works only with Iphone/Ipad but charges them also). The Bose SoundDock was not working when I arrived, but it has been fixed within 15 min by a sexy handyman. Unfortunately, the rest of the room was in perfect working situation and did not need a fix ;-). They don't pickup your laundry bag if you leave it at sight INSIDE the room: they ask you to place it OUTSIDE !

Comfortable bed (queen size) plus a sofa. Executive Rooms have the standard iron, blow dryer, minibar (no healthy snack), safe, water boiler and complimentary nescafe, teas and creamers. The furniture was much better than their "standard room".

Beware: executive rooms have "free internet" access, but it's NOT the wifi or internet tv access! Of course, I was charged using the "wrong" internet access.

Breakfast: a tasty buffet including choice of traditional english breakfast plus a nice range of healthy options: cereals, grains and light toppings. Soy milk available, as well as fresh fruits, low sugar preserves. I was just missing fresh -cottage- and local cheeses (they proposed processed cheese and sometimes light ham). Two nice TV+Breakfast stations with headphones. Breakfast at £13.50 postpaid - discounted to £10 is you prepay... but don't forget to show up before 10am!

FITNESS ROOM: My first stop when I arrived at night but my keycard did not open the gym main door. Same problem during my visit next morning. With many people fixing the fouth floor, I imagined that the gym was closed and I went to VirginActive instead (not free). At checkout, I've been told that their gym/sauna operate with a spearate and different keycard !!! Thanks for the tip.

BOTTOMLINE:
You really need an instruction manual to deal with all the specificities of this hotel

I definitely do NOT recommand their "standard room"

Instead consider their "executive room" if, like me, you can't live without
a fitness center, Nespresso coffee, good music and healthy breakfast
Their best rate is available on accor website (www.accorhotels.com)

I will have to go back to Manchester by the end of September, and I might consider again Novotel if they propose a really good rate for their executive room.
