“Good value executive rooms”
Reviewed August 26, 2014

Because of an early flight into Manchester, I arrived at the hotel hours before the 14:00 check-in time. I asked if I could check-in early, but there were no standard rooms available for an early check-in. The receptionist usefully suggested an upgrade to an executive room for 10 pounds, which was immediately available. The executive rooms are very modern and comfortable, good size bed and extra sofa-bed, and have their own nespresso machine, free broadband, etc. A friend was staying in a standard room, which is the same size as the executive room, but less modern. The 10 pounds upgrade is worth it. The Novotel was definitely a good choice.

Room Tip: An upgrade from standard to executive may be worth the 10 pounds/night.

I love this area. Practically in Chinatown and within a walking distance from most of the places (shopping areas, museums, Northern Quarter). And if you don't feel like walking, a tram stop is located 50-100 meters from the hotel.

The hotel is very average. Stayed in a standard room. A bit boring but spacious room, separate toilet and bathroom, a view to the dumpster back yard. Very clean. A safe, ironing faclities, coffee/tea, hairdryer, minifridge (not a minibar), free WiFi.
The bed was a bit uncomfortable, the pillows more so.

While I'm surprised that this hotel is only a 4-star hotel instead of a 5-star hotel, I definitely had a great time. The staff were super-friendly, the cleaners were considerate and they cleaned quietly in the morning, knowing that most of us lodgers were still sleeping after a long night out. The room was very spacious, and the bathroom was stunning - the spacious bath tub was a nice cherry on top. There are several places to plug in your chargers and various other cables, with a few places by each side of the bed - very useful if you, like me, sleep with your phone charging nearby. There's so much more I could say about this, but I think it's safe for me to say, out of all the hotels I've lodged in Manchester, this is by far the best one. Oh, and lastly - it is in the city centre, just 10 minutes away from Manchester Piccadilly station (on foot - roughly 3-5 minutes by taxi), but the area is safe and the hotel is pretty quiet, so no worries about being disturbed by annoying noises.

Room Tip: Definitely choose the executive rooms - the difference in pricing isn't too bad, but if you'...

Green Features: The hotel is serious about the environment, and I definitely appreciated it. There are notes in the room and bathroom detailing tips and best practices, and how I can help towards what the hotel is doing, such as saving towels etc.

Stayed here the other night when I couldn't get in anywhere else - its a good central location on the edge of Chinatown. Parking is in the Q Park underground - can be a bit tight for a large car, but seems relatively underused and priced ok.

The hotel is the usual Swedish blend of bright lights, light wood and quirky furniture. Check in was easy although the upsell for breakfast was wearing - when will hotels learn that their breakfasts are not good value? The room, despite looking onto the street was quiet, well ventilated and relatively spacious for the type of hotel. The bathroom is the usual Novotel fair, so a nice size, nice touches and good features- a large mirror with separate lighting control and a rainforest shower head. My own pet hate though in all Accor hotels is the separate toilet area - its just always feels small, cramped and dark. Why why why!!

Bed was a bit soft, not sure if it was tired or just a soft mattress but not to my taste.

Apart from that for £85 for the night was good value.

We stayed here one night mid-week in August, we only paid around £60 for the room including breakfast, so I feel like I can’t complain too much, however, if I was staying longer than one night or if I had not managed to get a ‘sale’ rate – I would be really disappointed.

LOCATION:

Decided to catch the train from the Airport and then free metro shuttle bus (Purple one) from Manchester Piccadilly Station which was a cheap and easy way to get to the hotel, even with large suitcases. The metro shuttle has a stop right across the road from the hotel, so it is very convenient.

The hotel I would say is around 5-10 minute drive from Piccadilly station and around a 10-15 minute walk to the Arndale Centre and surrounding streets. Manchester was a very easy town to walk and there are a number of free metro shuttle buses that service different routes which I found fantastic. As we were only in Manchester for less than 24 hours I didn’t venture too far out of the city centre.

HOTEL:

Check in and check out was speedy and hassle free, hotel offered luggage storage. The lobby area of hotel was nice, modern and clean. Free wifi is provided and there are also 2 computers in the lobby to use if needed.

We ate breakfast in the main restaurant and it was really nice. Not a massive spread but there was plenty of variety and they had most bases covered. Breakfast was help yourself and the wait service for clearing table etc. was great.

ROOMS:

This is where I was not impressed. We were on the fourth floor and the hallways leading to the rooms are dark, worn and depressing – upon entering our room it didn’t get much better. Our room was small, tired looking, stale smelling and the bed was lumpy and in desperate need of replacing. Bathroom and Toilet were separate. Toilet door wouldn’t close. Shower over bath was OK and worked fine. All in all, I am just glad that we were here for one night only and due to us coming off a long haul flight from Australia, we went to sleep pretty early and didn’t spend much awake time in the room.

OVERALL:

Overall, I wouldn’t stay at the Hotel again, however, am not too upset as we did get a very cheap price. I can say that if I had have paid a higher rate I would definitely have requested an alternate room or opted to move to another hotel.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for an updated/refurbished room to avoid disappointment

Stayed at the Novotel in July 2014. The hotel is located in China town in the centre of Manchester. (Just off Portland Street).
The price we paid was very good - around £50 a night on a Friday and Saturday. The hotel was fairly modern, clean and decent sized bedrooms.
All the usual ammentities. Location wise it was spot on. A short walk down Portland Street would take you to the Arndale Centre, Picadilly Gardens, etc.
Would definately stay again for the price.
HOWEVER ! If you are driving your own car....the Car Parking is an absolute rip off! £20 for 24 hours. Our total was £40 ! For Parking! Nearly as much as a room for the night.
Advice: park at a cheaper 24 hour car park and walk to the hotel.

This hotel is nicely situated in the city centre. The staff are friendly and courteous. The lobby is sparse but efficient with complimentary wifi & computers. The rooms however are a whole other matter. The executive rooms have been renovated and are quite nice however if you're not lucky enough to get one you are left with the dregs of the hotel. The standard rooms need some updating, especially the mattresses which are lumpy and hard as a rock, not to mention the pillows which are so flat you need to pile them on one another just for support. Some bathrooms have been reno'd but others are still using a nasty shower curtain which has a tendency to cling to you while showering... Gross! The carpeting could do with a good cleaning as well. I personally feel that a hotel should be able to offer their guests a consistently good product however each time I stay here it's like Russian roulette as to the quaily of room I will be assigned. Do yourself a favour and spend the money for the upgraded rooms or best to stay elsewhere.

Room Tip: Book executive rooms only
