“Basic accommodation but great for the price”
Reviewed February 26, 2012

Stayed here last night while we were in Manchester for a gig. The Millstone's a busy pub, when we went to the bar to check in, we had to push through crowds of people, and were told this was quiet! Fortunately, we were told about the back door to use to get in to the rooms - if you've got a lot of baggage, it may be worth checking in first rather than trying to bring bags through the main bar.

We had an ensuite double room which we'd paid £50 for the night (compared to Travelodge, etc who were charging around £95 per night!).

The room was basic, but cosy and comfortable. Big double bed, really comfy and warm at night. TV, kettle, tea and coffee facilities, towels provided. It wasn't luxurious or special, but had everything we needed and clean throughout. The place seems to be being decorated too, some work being done in the main stairway to improve the place.

The room was very loud when we got there due to the pub below, but when we came back after our night out, it was pretty quiet once the pub had shut, despite the people out on the streets outside.

Staff were friendly and helpful when we arrived and when we left. We didn't have breakfast, but saw some having what looked like a pretty good fry up, which I think was on offer for £5 each which is a pretty good price.

For a night out, it's in a great place, great price and has everything you need. Would definitely stay again.

Stayed here 2 nights in mid November 2011 due to attending a concert at the MEN.

As others have mentioned, the accommodation at this place is above a pub so if you have any issues with noise I would think twice before booking. We didn’t have a problem with the pub noise as we were out until very late anyway, but I would mention that if your trip means you wake up there on a Friday, they have their barrel delivery early in the morning which – particularly if staying in the twin room – was enough to wake even the deepest sleeper and VERY annoying because it seemed to go on forever!

Due to work commitments, we arrived after 11pm at night but we had pre arranged a late check in which they were happy to oblige with.

As mentioned, we had a twin room at the side of the building which had 2 lots of windows but only 1 set were able to be opened. The room was very warm which was good (probably too warm mind you – we had to turn the radiator down because it was so stuffy!) and it had a TV , tea & coffee making facilities and its own bathroom/toilet. Everything worked as such, but the bathroom was SOOO small you could touch the door, shower and sink at the same time! The room although OK, definitely needed updating with a good deep clean, lick of paint and some new carpet and basic fixtures and fittings. They also need to get some waste bins in the room (there were none whatsoever!) and a decent size mirror (the only one they provided was an 8 inch square one in the bathroom!)

There is street parking outside the pub, but you can only park here free during limited times and only for limited time during daytime hours. This is not a problem though because there is an NCP car park right opposite which opens at 6am. Please be aware that this is quite pricey though and if you want to park between 12-24 hours it will cost you over £15 which is quite a lot when you compare and add it to the room cost.

A good point is that this place is only about 10 minutes walk away from the arena which was obviously very handy and saved the hassle of trying to get a taxi or use public transport afterwards - which is always advisable when 14’000 people all leave at the same time! It is also located in the middle of the Northern Quarter so you are walking distance from bars, shopping and places to eat which again, is very handy.

Overall, id probably give this place a 7/10. The accommodation could have been a lot better but the helpful and friendly nature of the staff – as well as its location – made up for what it lacked in style and cleanliness.

This place is the opposite to your large commercial chain hotels. It's a local Mancunian pub with accommodation upstairs. The staff were extremely helpful, friendly and down to earth. The pub was very lively, cheap beer, excellent breakfast (served anytime you want it) and the rooms were comfortable and clean. We had a private bathroom although it was across the hall, that didn't bother us. Tea and coffee, flat screen TV, comfy beds. The location is the best part - 1 minute walk from bus station, 5 mins from Piccadilly train station, Arndale shopping center, Victoria Station, MEN arena. It was £150 for a triple room for three nights with breakfast. Great deal. Also, good to mention that there are lots of lovely vintage shops, cafes and nightclubs nearby this hotel.
Definitely going back to Manchester and would definitely stay at The Millstone!

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are probably quieter!

This place is more of an inn or B&B than a hotel, situated above the Millstone pub in the Northern Quarter. I stayed in a single, en-suite room on the 2nd floor, which was basic but clean and tidy, and more spacious than most single rooms I've stayed in. The attention to detail was lacking - no complementary toiletries/towel rail/loo roll holder/shelf to put toiletries on etc in the bathroom and no bedside table, lamp, bin etc in the bedroom. I also thought that the standard of decor and the bed linens was much better in my friend's double room next door. However, the bed itself was very comfortable and for the price I paid for my room, I think I'd have been hard-pushed to find better value accommodation in central Manchester.

Just a quick footnote for those who complain about noise - the accommodation is above a pub in the middle of a very busy city centre. It's hardly going to be an oasis of calm - stay somewhere outside of the city centre if you want quiet.

I go to Manchester quite regularly for gigs and would definitely stay here again.

Situated above a very loud pub was ok for us as we were on the 2nd floor. We were also out and about which was lucky as there was loads of noise until after 2.30am on Saturday night.
The room was clean but lacked the touches that we have been used too, simply things like a dressing table mirror, a waste paper bin, toilet roll holder, towel rail. The overall impression was " not yet finished ". We spent 2 nights here and my husband could not of done another on the extra firm bed. There was a kettle 2 mugs and a spoon and the initial tray of coffee sugar etc but it was never topped up, we always take our own coffee and powdered milk luckily.
We paid an extra £5 each per morning for a cooked full english...DONT BOTHER it was awful cold half cooked sausage and bacon swimming in grease 2 slices of hot bread sorry toast slapped on the top. No juice no marmade and in my case NO BREAKFAST. There are plenty of cafe's nearby open even at 7.30am where you can get a lovely breakfast for similar cost especially the market area of the Arndale centre, even on Sunday. This area is the Northern Quarter of Manchester and it is great for eating, drinking, sightseeing and the MEN arena.
In my opinion The Little Northern Hotel at the Millstone should be classed as a B&B not a Hotel. There is even a single room available without a window...bizzare !!

Room Tip: 2nd floor en suite is a must

Looking for accommodation for three adults is quite difficult but this was able to provide for our needs. At GBP 70.00 for a Saturday night it did prove disappointing, though. The room we were allocated did have its own bathroom but way across the lobby, which isn't really ideal. The quality of the rooms is also quite poor - whilst they are clean and tidy, there are minimal furnishings, the light had no cover/shade on and it generally felt a poor rate room in need of refurbishment. You could book a Travelodge, for example, at a similar rate, and whilst you'd do well to get three single beds, the feel and quality of the room would be significantly better, and nicer to return to at the end of the day.

Outside our bedroom, there was a communal toilet and shower, so I guess we were lucky to have a bathroom to ourselves, even if anyone could have used it - the external lock was broken!

There were a couple of positive points, however. The location is ideal for the Northern Quarter, which has a multitude of excellent bars, plus breakfast the following morning, down at the connecting pub, The Millstone, at GBP 5.00, was excellent and teriffic value.

Would I return, though? No.

Room Tip: Book somewhere else!
