“Good value pre-theatre dinner”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 16, 2012

We have eaten here over six times every year for the past 7 years. We try to see all the Exchange Theatre productions and choose to eat in The Round because you can guarantee getting your food and the bill before the performance begins. In the past we have tried other places, but it wasn't worth the anxiety caused by slow service or waiters not bringing the bill promptly. I haven't met any of the chefs (past or present) personally, but over the years the food has varied from poor to excellent. When we first ate here the menus were themed to the play running at the time and this resulted in some very peculiar meals (as well as good ones). However, the themed menus seem to have stopped (I presume the present chef vetoed the practice) and the quality of the food is so much better; it's delicious and beautifully presented. At £17.95 for 2 courses & and £19.95 for 3 courses, it's very good value. We usually choose the cheapest bottle of wine (red or white) and have always been happy with the quality. All the staff are polite and friendly. Give it a try-even if you aren't going to a performance.

“nice central venue for pleasant lunch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 1, 2012

When I am visiting Manchester, I have an annual get-together with friends who live in Cheshire, so a central easy-to-locate venue like the Royal Exchange is ideal, and for the third year running we have visited this pleasant little place for lunch. It is lovely to look over St Anne's Square while chatting over the meal. The food was of a good standard, nicely presented, and the staff are pleasant and quietly attentive. We will be here again next year!

“just sort of OK...but”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 26, 2011

The restaurant is very handy if you go to the Exchange Theatre , but its just that it looks Ok value on the menu for 2 course or 3 course meals, but when you come to ordering they just give you the basic fish/meat dish and dont include the vegetables of which if you want them ,they charge an exhorbitant amount which makes the meal very pricey. The food is just OK but not brilliant and it doesnt look as good value as the 2/3 course meal deals they do at the Lowry.
The service was very good though and they were very attentive.
4 out of 10 - must try harder.
