“Think travelodge but with a gym and better service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2014 via mobile

My partner and I stayed at this hotel in a King room for one night midweek to attend a concert at the MEN.
Basically think Travelodge but with better facilities and a gym.
Pros:
About a 10 min taxi from Picadilly station.
Lovely staff on reception/bar.
Nice bar area.
Good sized room.
Very clean.
Comfy bed/black out curtains
Free wifi in room.
Plugs are next to the mirror (but see below).
Fab pool/gym/squash courts/cardio room/weights room/sauna/steam (pool was lovely and warm!)
Cost- minimal

Cons:
We turned up and couldn't get into the car park as it was full of gym users. Also once you're in the car park queue you can't get out of it although you've no guarantee it'll move for an hour or so!
The room was a bit battered in places. A broken lampshade etc but to us for one night it wasn't of importance.
The biggest issue was the lack of plugs! There were only 2 plugs in the whole room!! That's right, just two and neither were next to the bed??? (So couldn't charge mobile next to bed/use as alarm). Plus both were already in use!!
One had the wifi box plugged in it and the other had the TV.
So if you wanted a cuppa you had to sacrifice either the wifi or TV! Same for drying hair/straightening hair so it didn't go down well with my other half!!

Overall: a good value hotel. I'd bring a plug adaptor and arrange to arrive at gym/car park off peak time but I would definitely stay here again. A better than good budget hotel.

We didn't eat in hotel so can't comment on food.

Me and my partner have stayed at the castle field a couple of times now and it is a lovely hotel, great staff, good beer and a lovely English breakfast just what you need after a night out in manchester. Rooms are well decorated with a television and bath tub which we didn't get to use along with the gym and swimming pool. Good value but taxis are needed to get around as it is abit out the way. Overall we would stay here again and again.

Dil_prescott,
Many thanks for reviewing the hotel and delighted you enjoyed the beer from the selection of real ales provided, along with the welcome & breakfast.Depending on where you are visiting in Manchester, or how far you want to walk, you may want to use a taxi but, with the hotel just 400 metres from Deansgate, Manchester's main thoroughfare, the heart of the city is within walking distance.

I stay at this hotel on business three nights per week. It is well located near the centre of Manchester and combines perfectly acceptable quality with a friendly welcome and a good price. The sports facilities are excellent if somewhat busy and the rooms are comfortable, provided you have a double - don't go for a twin as they are at the road side of the hotel and a bit noisy. The only criticism one can legitimately make is that the sound proofing between rooms isn't great and hearing someone else's TV blaring out at 1.00 in the morning can be a little annoying. Food is OK but breakfast is definitely significantly better when cooked to order.

Room Tip: Pick a double room, not a twin!

I stayed in room 311 for one night this last weekend. Efficient, friendly-enough check-in. Free Wi-Fi which worked well. I don't know whether the room had been recently refurbished or whether previous reviewers were just completely over the top hard-to-please, but the room was perfectly adequate for the standard of hotel. Clean, nicely equipped if basic. I didn't use the tv but it was a nice size flat screen so would have been much better to watch than some of the stingy-sized TVs I've experienced in much more expensive hotels nearby...

I had arrived a little earlier in the evening to use the pool but it was closed so that idea was scuppered. And though I intended to get up early in the morning to use it, it just wasn't going to happen for reasons that will become clear...

When I went to bed I sank into the super-comfy bed expecting a gorgeous night's sleep. Unfortunately the fundamental problem with this hotel is the acoustics and lack of sound insulation. I dreamt of some monotonous radio or tv voice droning on and on and on and on. and woke up to find I wasn't dreaming - couldn't work out whether it was coming from outside or in the hotel but when I caught up with a colleague the following morning she said she heard it too. Anyway I did manage to drift off into a shallow sleep and then was abruptly woken up around 5am by someone apparently banging on the door of the next door room, then foreign voices. They weren't shouting but their voices just seemed to carry as if they were in my room with me. Then "IT" started... the incessant banging of the doors. It just seemed like everyone in the whole hotel was going in and out of their rooms banging their doors with their full force. It is no exaggeration to say my door was rattling like crazy. It went on and on until I managed to drag myself out of my bed like a hung-over zombie at around 8am (I wasn't hung over btw). The culprit wasn't inconsiderate guests but the fact that the doors automatically slam shut. It really is crazy. I think the hotel could probably do well to invest in some gentler closing mechanisms and dampeners - it really would make all the difference. A good night's sleep before a work seminar is a fundamental need! ;)

I went down to breakfast and found the breakfast which I had paid £7 for was a barely heated buffet arrangement. To be fair it tasted nice enough - good sausages lol -but really was only worth £3 not £7 - my advice to guests is to save your money and find somewhere nearby that will give you a fried breakfast cheaper or a super slap up one for the same price. The coffee (white) from the machine was god-awful and tasted like it had been made with evaporated milk but my colleague said the black coffee was fine.

On a more positive note the check-out was super efficient and friendly.

Would I come back? - yes, maybe if I brought some earplugs or if the hotel invests in some solution to the noise problem

Room Tip: Bring earplugs and I'm sure you'll be ok

VinSurrey UK,

Thank you for the feedback and I am glad that you found the free wifi efficient, the appointment of the room satisfactory and the bed 'super comfy'. Your comments about noise intrusion are unusual and all self closers and door retainers have been checked for efficiency and noise.Apologies for the problem sleeping. You may rest assured that your constructive criticism will receive the attention it deserves.

Just returned from an overnight stay for my partners birthday. Meal at the Hilton, a few drinks and a clean, comfortable room to sleep in. After reading some of the reviews I was concerned about the hotel but IHad no need to be. We had an ordinary double room and it was warm, very clean and perfect for our needs. The staff were fantastic, the shower was one of the best hotel showers ever ( and I've experienced many hotel showers) and the breakfast was excellent. For his birthday last year we stayed at the Hilton Deansgate and paid about 3 x the price for a very similar room with a larger tv. I will leave you to decide which is best value for money!

Room Tip: We had room 214 which had a really good layout.

Great location, shame about the weather, but that's not the hotel's fault.
We had a first floor room, and could hear an odd noise but found it to be from the gym/spa close by but it only lasted for the afternoon.
Good tasty buffet breakfast.
Only one tiny criticism, the telly was at right angle to the bed, but more to the hotel than telly position.

Good location. We had a really warm welcome on the front desk on arrival. Very efficient. Great to have use of the health club downstairs although the pool is pretty no frills. Clean though. Our main disappointment was that our room smelled musty and damp. Not surprisingly really as there was no fan in the bathroom and no where for steam to go. The bedroom window was open when we arrived in the room, I imagine to try to make it less noticeable. The smell seemed to get worse over the evening. I imagine this isn't a problem throughout the whole hotel depending on ventilation. Just avoid room 216 for sure! We mentioned our concerns on checkout and reception staff were helpful. I hope it is resolved and not ignored. Breakfast pretty mediocre but fine. Generally just ok but we wouldn't be likely to return again.

Ronpig,

Thanks for the feedback and apologies for the problem experienced with your room. Each bathroom has a vent ( circular disc shape) that allows air circulation throughout the building and that has been checked to ensure it is working correctly.
There has not been any repeat of the problem and room 216, like all others, is functioning correctly.

We would be delighted for you to return next time you visit Manchester and would ask that you contact us directly in order that we can ensure all services & facilities are to your entire satisfaction.
