I booked an executive room for £85 thinking yup yup what a good deal. On the website it showed pics of a beautiful room with arched windows overlooking the square. Obviously when i got there it wasn't the same. To be fairthe room was very nice, with lovely white furniture, massive flat screen and giant mirror (cracked). The bathroom even better: bathtub, shower, massive mirror....red and black, pretty cool.
Then the problem started. ..the door didn't close properly (massive gap underneath), the floor creaked badly. ..as the bed! No double glazing that kept the room very cool (heating totally off); shower door didn't close so water everywhere. ..it was an executive room and we got only a couple of bars of soap...not even a dressing gown. No biscuits. No shower gel. Ok I sound very pivvy and picky but hey...executive! Not even breakfast included... 5 quid per person. Cannot comment coz I didn't try it.
On the plus side the lady at reception was nice and the position is super central close to everything.
Ok for a one night out but that's it...especially when the bed is so noisy....

The Mitre hotel is gorgeous, situated right next to the Arndale centre and just infront of the Cathedral. We booked the luxury room (number 1) for one night when we came up to Manchester to watch Muse at the Etihad and we weren't disappointed. The hotel is over 200 years old so you have to expect the creaks and cracks - we thought that they added character. Yes, there are aspects that need improvement - the decor is definitely lovely but there are cracks in the tiles in the bathroom, loose light fittings and gaps in the doors, etc. No double glazing and thin curtains means the sun streams through the windows early, and with a hangover this might not be to your liking. Our bed was also very, very creaky, but also very comfortable. The hotel does make you aware that rennovations are due to take place over the year though so these issues weren't a problem to us and we actually thought it added charm. There's a huge TV in the room but none of the TVs in the hotel were apparently working that weekend.
We were woken at 10am on Sunday morning by the Cathedral's bells. I thought it was lovely, but my boyfriend didn't, so I suppose it's a matter of taste. Breakfast's great - standard English breakfast with beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, sausage, eggs and bacon plus toast, yoghurt, cereal and fruit to help yourself to and runs from 8.30-10.30 which I think is a good time. Friendly, helpful staff and the bar stays open till 5am! Great place to stay for a gig at the Etihad stadium and for visiting Manchester city centre in general - it's much nicer than a standard chain hotel. Despite it's small flaws we wish we'd stayed for more than one night and we'd definitely stay again if we're in Manchester! Thanks :)

Room Tip: We stayed in the luxury room which was very nice and right next to the reception and kitchen area.

Booked a standard double room for the night for a surprise for partners birthday. Greeted by friendly staff and headed to the room. Upon opening the door, the carpet was frayed and dirty. There was consistent mould in the room, on the walls and ceilings. The bathroom had black mold around the bath and the bathroom floors were sticky. The only plus side about the room was it looked clean around all the mold and stickiness. We immediately went to reception and complained about the room. The Receptionist didn't look surprised and went and spoke to the manager. Seconds later she returned and stated we would we upgraded to another room, this was the executive or luxury double room. This room was slightly better and bigger but still consisted of frayed carpets and sticky bathroom floors. The walk in shower was big enough to fit 10 year old in. I would have refused to pay what the hotel are asking for, for this room.
The location was great, but wish we had stayed in the Travel lodge around the corner, would have been cleaner and cheaper. Don't be fooled by the pictures on the website, someone has done a fantastic job with photoshop!!!

We thought we were all set for our trip to Manchester, then the football match got moved to a different date. Our hotel we already had booked of course raised their price for the next night. So we scoured for a cheap one night option. We picked the Mitre for a few good reasons:

1) very cheap
2) good location
3) ridiculous decorations

It did not disappoint on those three points. I think when booking we had a choice between this and another hotel, but the lure of crushed velvet in one of the oldest hotels in Manchester was too great! The Mitre won out.

Rooms are small, a little worn in, but clean. The mattress is quite frankly, awful. It feels like the springs could burst through the fabric at any moment. I don't see why they don't put a mattress pad on these things. Even a very thin one would make a world of difference. We were right by the stairs so it was a little noisey, the other couple we traveled with I think had a quieter stay. But then we had hot water, and they didn't so. It all evens out.

We didn't have time for the pub proper, but the lobby / residents bar looks like they let a 16 yr old girl go wild in a craft store. And it's true they don't have a room to put your luggage, and the stairs are steep. But hey the residents bar is supposedly open till 5 am. So you've got that going for you.

The staff was all very nice. (even if one was a Man City fan) I know some people say you are supposed to leave your key at the desk but since they didn't tell us to we didn't and it didn't seem to be a problem. Oh and the entrance is around the back and up the stairs.

Would I stay here again? For how very little we paid (for an en suite), I would if it was only one night. But I don't think I could handle that mattress more then one night.

i find this hotel is what you make of it, as all the other reviews state, the staff are great the location is great and it is cheap and clean, indisputably.
It is undergoing renovation, i hope they don't alter this 200 year old gem too much, it is quirky and very reasonably priced, personally, complaining about noise when you have booked such a city central location makes you a natural born whinger, and lord knows there are no shortage of them.
check in is quick and easy, and the staff will bend over backwards to help, even with the most ridiculous demands. breakfast was prompt and all you can eat and of a good standard, we had a problem with the shower, but for a 200 year old building there are bound to be some issues, we let the receptionist know and it was dealt with quickly and with a smile. I will book again certainly, and will rest assured i have somewhere safe and central to lay my head for a very reasonable price.
