“OK hotel, a little offbeat maybe”
Reviewed September 28, 2012

The roofs of the rooms are small and there are columns/pillars in the room that you could bang your head into. Seriously - the hotel is a little weird almost in certain respects.
Pros - the breakfast by the water is good (your typical english breakfast)
Cons - the staff is mostly good, the odd bad/poorly trained apple. The bathroom amenities were lacking, the food from room service might have been microwaved food, in anycase it was not very good.
The hotel itself - Its a very old and charming place to many, but not to me - especially since its dark and away from any kind of street life or activity. There are many other hotels in the center of town or near the train station for lower prices which will serve one better.

Room Tip: A room overlooking the river is nice

The hotel interior is very nice. It has a lot of charachter, an old building very tasetfully refurbished. The rooms are good size very clean and comfortable.

Great breakfast.

The surrounding area is great to walkabout lots of restaurants, shopping and the river.

We stayed here 10 days while visiting family in Manchester. A very attractive hotel, attentive staff. Any small problems were quickly attended to. Easy walking distance to most of Manchester as well as the three free bus routes around the city.

We are a retired couple and had a lovely stay at this hotel. The only problem was we were on the 4th floor and the room was very, very hot. For safety reasons the small window was locked and when we went to the Consiege they immediately gave us another room just 4 doors along the corridor and they even sent the porter up to help us move our belongings. Maybe we were lucky that this room was available but the staff were very understanding and most helpful..It was an upgraded room so we were delighted. Apparantly they have a problem with the air con and I understand they are trying their best to rectify it.
We opted to park the car next door at £8 per 24 hours, rather than £16 Valet park at the hotel. As we were there for two nights stay we thought we could book for the duration in one go....wrong.....you can just book 24 hours each time so we had to be back to next morning to place another 24 hour slot. The machine does not give out change so you must have enough coins, however there is an automated credit card machine and if you follow the screen it is easy to follow. there's a phone number on the screen if you are not sure how it works or you have a problem with the transaction..
Back to the hotel, we were going to see Legally Blond at the Opera House and the hotel is just 2 to 3 mins walk. It's an ideal position. In Manchester there is even a free bus going around the city. We didn't need to use it but our friends got it from the train station to the Arndale Centre.
We ate in the hotel restaurant and it was pleasant and reasonably priced at 2 courses + a glass of wine for £15 or 3 courses + wine for £20. The bar was well attended on the nights we were there and then again staff were very attentive and friendly. I feel this hotel gave us everything we would expect from a Marriott and we will definately be back.

Room Tip: Ask if the air con is fixed !!! We are never in the room for long other then bed time, the windows a...

There are some people you can never please and having read other reviews of this hotel I fully understand why the British have a reputation for moaning, particularly in respect of trivia which they seldom confront ( ie: "poached eggs too hard" and "dust on the bedside cabinet"). Lets put the record straight. This hotel is ideally situated, has a really pleasing ambiance, provides great food, comfortable rooms and all round excellent service delivered by extremely helpful staff.
I would be happy to recommend it to anybody ... including those who expect "The Dorchester" experience.

I Travel frequently to Manchester, using a different hotel every time looking for the perfect one! Marriott location is good, within walking distance from center as well as university and convention center. The staff are absolutely delightfully and helpful at the reception. My only problem is that I stayed in suite 436, the walls were very thin, I could hear all the conversation next door as well as the tv shows they were watching!! I was unlucky that my neighbors were inconsiderate and turned the TV volume to the Max till 2 am!! I informed the reception but to no avail. I'm flying back home today, I will try to catch up on my sleep. Don't think I'm going back there again.

I recently spent 6 nights at the hotel on business. The rooms are much larger than the average European hotel. The AC is powerful and easily controlled. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom is also of good size with great shower pressure. I had some issues with the first room and the hotel took care of resolving it promptly. Service was excellent. No gym on the property, but they do offer free use of a nice nearby gym. Overall a very nice hotel.
