Stayed here for an evening the other week. It was a last second decision so choices were limited, hence I opted for this place, mainly due to the location.
My check in wasn't as bad as some people's, but there seemed to be a lack of organization. They seemed to take an awful long time to sort things out (well, more than 5 minutes, which is longer than one would expect.) But the staff were perfectly civil. The staircase up to the rooms really is as bad as everybody says. It was very worn and untidy, and smelt grim. Just rank in general!
The room itself was... okayish... I was initially pleasantly surprised to find a shower in my room, til I really it didn't work, and then started to question what it was even doing there, taking up space! The room was also far too hot. Luckily I didn't need to be there long before heading out. The bed was clean and not too uncomfortable, but didn't seem in great condition: one of the bars on the headboard fell off when I first sat on the bed. I'm not very heavy so I sincerely doubt I caused that myself! It was really quite noisy at night but then, it's right in the centre of Canal Street, so I can't exactly blame the hotel for that. Patrons of the village are not renowned for their quietness, especially late at night.
Breakfast actually wasn't too bad at all. Service was quick and efficient. Free and functioning wifi was a + point. I couldn't find anybody to give my key to when I checked out so I had to just leave the key in the room.
Overall I'd be lying if I were to actively recommend this establishment in any way. The location is handy but overall, I'd suggest only booking here as a very last resort, and making sure you don't splash out too much on the room. That's if you can actually get past the horrendously grubby stairwell to the rooms, which makes far from a good first impression.
