“Disgusting, depressing disgrace”
Reviewed April 20, 2014 via mobile

Piccadilly "Gardens" gets worse by the day. What a filthy, disgusting embarrassing dump greeting visitors to this great city.

I studied near the old Sunken Gardens in the '80s and my memories of it then are not as nostalgic as some reviewers'. It was always choked with pollution and a haven for drunks and down-and-outs. But it had greenery and nature, unlike the hideous, lawless wasteland that now exists.

What a gateway for local shoppers, commuters or those arriving from out of the region or overseas through Piccadilly Station, or staying in the many smart hotels that flank this zone. The litter is beyond description: Mancunians should have more self-respect than to trash their own backyard as they do here, but the fact also remains that bins are few and far between and rarely emptied, leaving fast food filth to bowl around the concrete abomination that is the square. It's sickening.

Worryingly, the detritus is now creeping into the streets of the Northern Quarter, which, with its independent shops and good eateries, is a great area in which to roam and enjoy an atmosphere different to that in the main commercial centre. It cannot be good for these businesses to have puke everywhere and old take-away trays piled up in doorways - they looked like they'd been there for months. It isn't edgy and hip, it's ugly.

I am a Mancunian and feel ashamed. I brought a friend to visit the city 14 months ago, and though she was hugely impressed with the city overall, Piccadilly Gardens were looking atrocious even then. Now, I just feel grateful that she didn't see it today. I have lived in Cairo and it is cleaner, though less wealthy.

No more excuses. This zone is a blight and a shame. I visited Leeds for the first time last week, and while it has fewer grand buildings than Manchester in my opinion, it felt happier and was far cleaner. I wouldn't blame any visitor passing through Piccadilly for turning right 'round and getting the hell back out of town.

“Could be so much more.”
Reviewed April 16, 2014

It's a shame how bad things have got at Piccadilly. It's just littered with dealers, tramps, scroates and well, litter! Hardly see police moving people on. The big concrete wall is an eyesore, as is the empty, towering office block and it always smells a bit funky. Would like nothing more than having some lunch in town, on the grass, watching the fountains and people pass by but honestly I don't even stop when I'm walking past anymore. Only plus, and it's barely a redeeming factor seeing as Manchester is full of this,
is that there are sometimes decent food markets and buskers here, making it okay on a Saturday afternoon, but I'd avoid walking through in the evenings completely.

“avoid”
Reviewed April 14, 2014

truly awful place, I was there on Saturday evening and there was litter everywhere, an ugly concrete dump from a bygone era, with a delightful bus station One of the worst places I have been to. Avoid this area if at all possible - go to Liverpool or Leeds instead.

“Manchester deserves better”
Reviewed April 12, 2014

I recently spent a few days in Manchester and really enjoyed visiting this vibrant and friendly city.
However, given the impressive attractions, architecture, bars and restaurants in other parts of the city centre, I felt that Piccadilly gardens was a real let down. The square consists of swathes of concrete with small patches of grass, which for some unknown reason were surrounded by barriers, perhaps to prevent people from enjoying the remaining bit of green space. It was also the one part of the centre I felt a little bit uneasy when I was walking through.
