As well as classics from William Shakespeare, Tennessee Williams, Oscar Wilde, Noel Coward, and Anton Chekhov, we're also one of the country's leading theatres for new writing, with over 125 premieres in the theatre history! The unique design means that none of the 760 seats are more than nine metres from the circular stage, with seats placed all around the auditorium, giving views from all angles. The Great Hall surrounds the Theatre, and this houses The Round restaurant, Bar Exchange, the Craft Shop and exhibitions, the Education Lounge and workshops, the Information Point, the Mezzanine Gallery exhibitions, as well as Friday evenings' FREE entertainment SPECIAL FX.And we're open on a Sunday too! With brunch served in our Great Hall cafe and free entertainment during the day.

We've been going there for 40 years - don't know why never reviewed it. We love the modern design in-the-round and glass and steel inside classical surroundings. On the positive side, the addition of the Studio is a great asset, and the quality of productions in general both there and in the main theatre is good, actors very skilled even if not the big names. On the negative side choice of plays seems to pay too much attention to what is going to be successful, rather than the early enterprising spirit. And finally one serious criticism (shared by many friends): the direction does not demand that actors speak up - a magnified problem in-the-round. And a final positive: spring-summer 2013 program is very good.

An interesting theatre set INSIDE an interesting building. I've seen a few shows here and enjoyed them in the whole.
The bar is nice enough but (as usual in a theatre) a little too expensive.

The theatre is in the round so if you're not used to that, it can be very interesting. However, I'm used to the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough (as I used to live there) so theatre in the round is more normal to me!

Worth a trip and a visit.

One of the greatest theatres in manchester. A beautiful building. The theatre is in the round, so the actors interact with the audience. Some of the greatest actors started there. Wonderful bar and cafe, a great place to relax on a sunday afternoon.

Gorgeous building internally, it’s worth just wandering in for a look or maybe to sit and have a coffee but the shows are usually also of a high calibre, the unusual asoect here is the theatre is set in the middle of the building so the shows are ‘in the round’, this allows for a greater degree of audience involvement and interaction. If there is something on you recognise or just want to try something different then give it a go, well recommended.

I love to go here any time of the day. Even if it is just to have a coffee, chat and admire the architecture. I have seen a lot of theatre here over the years and never disappointed. Over a season there is something for everyone.
