“Currently a mess”
Reviewed July 20, 2014

A gracious Victorian buiding currently having a huge concrete structure added for the tram network. Looks like architectual vandalism but not easy to imagine until complete. Needs reviewing in a few months' time.

“Not really an attraction”
Reviewed June 14, 2014

The station is merely a place to start or end your journey! A shadow of it's former self with the area dwarfing the station and almost turning the through platforms into an underground station!
The huge map of the old Lancashire and Yorkshire railway system is still a positive attraction situated opposite the end of the booking office windows-and must be seen.

“Victoria station-a very busy train station”
Reviewed February 16, 2014

Victoria train station, has a lot of history to it.Every time i visit this place, i am in awe by the structure as well as the designed of it.Its always very busy with commuters who are going about their daily routines and the station staff are always very helpful.I cant comment on the station toilets as i didn't use them,But this station is defiantly worth a visit.

“A tribute to Manchester City Council's planning incompetence”
Reviewed February 7, 2014

Until the late 1980s, Victoria station was a light, airy and pleasant place to catch a train. The long 1904 frontage was one of the city's few Victorian gems which hadn't been erased in the 1970s when the city council allowed the ghastly Arndale Centre to be built. The main train shed area and booking office was fully glazed with elegantly rounded passerelles at each window. The through platforms (6 of them) featured wide platforms and another airy trainshed. A bit of a timepiece and one sadly neglected by British Rail and the city since the 1950s.

Then the planners had a great idea. Remove all the main services to Piccadilly station, meaning all travelers start off as far as possible from the city centre. Demolish all the through platform area, build an arena on top and make the through platforms gloomy concrete boxes. Build the arena so large that it overshadows the station frontage and and a multiplicity of narrow footbridges that make getting around the station difficult, Finally, make no provision for ticket checking and you have a textbook example of how not to attract people to public transport. The mix was salted a little more in 1991/92 by replacing the excellent Bury train service with trams which were (and are) not only unfit for purpose but made the station into a complete mish-mash of uncoordinated designs and passenger accesses. Apart from the 1904 elements of the station, it was and is unremittingly grim.

Ironically the latest plans for Manchester's rail transport involve returning the services moved to Piccadilly in 1988/89 and spending lots of money to re-roof the two terminal platforms and tram stops. The main platforms will not be touched by this, so Victoria will remain a disgraceful hotch-potch with hopelessly inadequate access to and from the principal platforms.

“Disgusting toilets”
Reviewed December 20, 2013

I appreciate that the station is old, undergoing a lot of renovation and looks dark and dilapidated but this review is just about the terrible state of the toilets. On my way out of the station I decided to use the Ladies. Access is gained through a waiting room from which the Ladies' and Men's toilets lead. The door to the Ladies is kept closed but the door to the Men's stands open and from it emanates the most vile smell of stale urine. My husband said the smell inside was even worse and women coming through the waiting room to use the Ladies were holding scarves in front of their noses as the smell was so bad. Please, whoever is responsible for the toilets at Victoria sort this out now. This is a mainline railway station and I hate to think what visitors from other towns and cities must think when they pop into the toilets before heading off into the city.
