very nice hotel. very pleasureable stay. rang before check in due to change of plans to switch from a double to family room but was allocated a large exec room with space for travel cots at no extra cost - thank you! however was confused and annoyed at check in. was told to pay £25 surcharge above advertised / booked price for extra's and this would be refunded. this was not made clear before hand! and told if i wanted to pay cash it would be an extra £50 charge?!?!?!?! but when i questioned the receptionist she said she would charge me just the room price??? not a good start. also returned home to find i had my card receipt attached to another guests inventory - all personal details included. so who's details are these??? and where are mine???

We stayed at this Hotel for a romantic weekend. It was a real let down. The room was more Travelodge than Malmaison ... I put our disappointment on the comments card. I had an email later the day we left explaining they were so very sorry we were unhappy with the room and that the 'best' side of the hotel was next to road works, which was the case. We were offered a stay for the same price in their best suite ... a couple of months later we took them up on their offer. The suite was stunning.

This is a beautiful hotel, the breakfast is amazing. I think if you're going for a romantic break, when you book ask for a decadent room. We have been back several times since and very much enjoyed our stay. The Hotel is perfectly placed for the Northern Quarter which we love.

Room Tip: Ask for a decadent room - ensure it not a newer redecoration they have gone for stark minimalism - n...

We have stayed at the Malmasion several times & have usually done the Sunday night deal, which we have always enjoyed, with lovely initmate rooms & an option to upgrade rooms for £100.00. We have always enjoyed great food & atmosphere in the smoak grill, & lovely cocktails, in the busy bar.
This time we did a full weekend, & the room given on the 1st floor, was ok but not as impressed as we have been on the past visits, just minor details, a bit of Voile hanging down, & pixel lines down to corner of the TV, we did not get room service the 2nd day, we did not hang a card on the door, but on returning later that day a card had been hung on there not to be disturbed!!
Overall good stay but lack of attention to detail is letting the Malmaison Manchester down a liitle.

My partner and I stayed here on Monday 1st of April and were generally impressed by this lovely hotel that is superbly placed for exploring Manchester city centre and the Northern quarter - also a short walk from Manchester Piccadilly train station. Upon arrival in Manchester at 12pm we dropped our bags off early at the hotel (before check-in) which was a free service. When we returned to the hotel at 4 we were told that our room still wasn't quite ready (it had been a very busy easter weekend the two previous nights and so we didn't mind) - we only had to wait 15 minutes, during which time we enjoyed a complimentary glass of champagne at the bar. One little niggle was that there was nobody on the bar when we sat down and we waited a good while before I had to ask someone at the reception to find us the bar staff; what made this more annoying was that the matradee for the adjoining restaurant was standing about 10 feet away from us and had seen us sit down - she should have read our body language, addressed us, and retrieved the bar man; whether that was part of her job description or not; she wasn't attending to anyone else at the time. After that little hiccup, we enjoyed a lovely meal in the restaurant ourselves and were served by a genuinely brilliant Canadian waitress (sorry I didn't get your name) who was so friendly and attentive that it added to the enjoyment of the meal; even a small problem with our meal was dealt with quickly and expertly when we were offered free dessert. The suite we had was lovely too; clean and excellent bathroom facilities. The only gripe here was that there was no openable window in the room (a fault with so many chain hotels), and the breathable air from the air conditioning left us both a little choked in the morning. The next day we were also able to leave our bags at the hotel after check-out for the whole day (free of charge) before we caught our train home. All in a really enjoyable overnight stay with many positives.

Room Tip: Cinema suite is spacious and great if you want to have a night in.

Check in was very poor. Took 20 minutes trying to find my details then gave us a form to fill in with my wrong address on.Booked double room ended up with two singles. Best shower we have ever had, like being under a waterfall. Comfy beds leading to a good nights sleep. Poor reception for Television you would think you were in Outer Mongolia not the UK. In the bar they do not serve pints of beer only schooners (2/3 of a pint but same price as a pint). Bar staff worked hard especially on preparing cocktails. There was a nice atmosphere in the bar area.

Room Tip: Double check before you go you have got what you asked for

Our whole stay and dinner in the restaurant worked really well for us. The rooms facing the back of the property were very quiet, in a good state and had the usual great monsoon shower. We had a family dinner on the bench bar overlooking the kitchen which we were offered as a consolation as every other table was taken. This worked out great for the kids and kept them interested watching the chef at work. That said I had to stay there the following week on business and the room wasn't so good .....401 ....there was something up with the air con or water tank above that meant there was a constant gurgling noise....avoid this room !!

Mal Manchester: In the home of the beautiful game you're about to turn Moulin Rouge. A short trundle for wheel-based luggage from Piccadilly Station and you're at the Mal - somewhere in the mists between Paris and the 24-hour party city. You cross the chessboard reception and suddenly you're a king for the knight. It's your move. Smoak Bar and Grill at Mal Manchester: A grill room and bar quite unlike anything Manchester has ever before seen. Set in the award-winning Malmaison Hotel minutes from Piccadilly station, Smoak is total indulgence for the senses. The amazing aroma of nation's finest oak-smoked steaks and fresh fish, served to a pewter counter or cosy booth. Imagine great imported beers, cocktails and bubbly served from an unusual sunken bar, with highly skilled mixologists serving you while you stay seated. Picture a stylish relaxed but chic interior a mix of booths, banquettes and counter stools. Come lunchtime and it's locally sourced bread, generously filled sandwiches and salads or full blown grill dining for the more adventurous lunchtime escapee. Come sundown the mood changes and we turn the aromas up to eleven. The cocktails flow, the steaks sizzle, the music turns up and the night begins. Ember Lounge at Mal Manchester: We could tell you about the Ember Lounge - an immaculate and opulent cocktail bar furtively hidden to the rear of the Smoak Bar & Grill. ... more   less
