“Budget Manchester option”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 8, 2012

There were good and bad elements to be gleaned from my stay at the Gardens Hotel. In sum, it's a budget option and this is reflected in the general experience and hence is rated average for the price-bracket and on levels of expectation.

The pluses: The price was good and certainly cheaper than most equivalent options in the city. The wifi worked reliably and there was a good TV. The hotel is very well located close to the railway station and all of the main city thoroughfares.

The downsides: The place is somewhat tired and shabby. I was disturbed by noise repeatedly through the night (passers-by, street cleaning, bin collections) and I was at the BACK of the hotel. The breakfast wasn't overly impressive, and I would avoid paying the breakfast charge if it's not included in the room rate. For a third of the price, there is a Wetherspoons a few doors down who would probably do something of better quality and quantity, or if you're after the continental option then Tesco Express across the road could supply the ham and Babybel that was on offer here.

It's fine for an occasional night or just for somewhere to crash if partying in the city. There are however plenty of local options if business expense allowances or personal budget permits.

get what you pay for hotel, perfect for a night out as in a great location. paid 50 quid for a night's stay, in my opinion good value. Room was clean, albeit dark but overall fine. Basic items you need in room including LCD tv and hot drinks and hair dryer

Typical food, nice location with internet free Wi-fi, but the food simple, British breakfast....

The hotels in UK are mostly dated, and this one it's the typical example. The hotel looks like 2 start hotel with very small rooms and they smell. Windows are very bad, windy.

Room Tip: choose another hotel

Stayed here once as a kid with parents, boy has manchester changed.

Like this place its nice, airy rooms, great staff great service a PLEASURE TO STAY HERE!

Only slight problem was it didnt feel to reassuring to walk outside at night but thats mainly because it is in a city center and you are going to get drunks and druggys stumbling around outside, but the hotel itself was safe and secure

Our stay in this hotel was booked by friends who, unfortunately, did not realise they had booked an "internal" double room for us. The room had no window, nor any air conditioning. The carpet was dark red, walls chocolate brown with extremely poor lighting which gave it a dull, stuffy, excessively warm and oppressive feel.

Not quite the description in the marketing leaflet ... "bright, modern decor" !!! Walls had torn wallpaper and and skirting boards were chipped and scuffed, not to mention the cobwebs.

If you had been suffering from depression, your stay in this room alone could quite have happily finished you off !!!

On reapproaching Anthony, manager on duty at reception, he thankfully changed the internal room for an external twin at the front of the building which was flooded with light. Thank you Anthony!

On the plus side, beds were comfortable and breakfast was good apart from the dead jenny long legs and live moth in the teacup.

Location is extremely central and staff were very pleasant - reception, in the breakfast room and housekeeping. I feel for them as I expect they are constantly brow beaten over the poor standards of this hotel.

Cairns Group, owner of this hotel, needs to raise its game and invest some money in this property. If it thinks its offering is 3 star and on a par with the bigger chains ... think again. There were 5 in our company and not one of us will grace the Gardens again.

Over to you Cairns Group ... get your finger out. You're losing business hand over fist !!!

Room Tip: Book somewhere else !!!!

A good value for money hotel, in a great location in the City centre, tasty breakfast and friendly staff!! Rooms can get very warm but are good if you only use it as a room. Nice hotel always cheaper than others around!

I had stayed at this hotel several times previously, admittedly nine years ago being the last time. In that time the hotel has gone from being run with pride to becoming a bit a of dump. The saving grace is the location, as it is central and walking distances to all the shops, restaurants and Piccadilly Gardens.

I had made the mistake of booking an internal room, without realising these rooms do not have windows. Reception were extremely helpful and were able to find rooms with windows for me and my friends on the same booking. Considering it was the bank holiday weekend, they were superb and friendly helping rectify the situation.

The rooms are tired and basic and did not give the sense of being too clean. The bathroom smelled terribly like mildew/damp and when entering the room in the evening the smell was strong enough to knock you backwards. It was quite disgusting to have to enter the room and especially use the bathroom. The shower pressure was really strong, but uncontrollably strong, so taking a shower was not easy and quite a task. The bed was comfortable but nothing to write home about.

The breakfast which was included in the rate was one of the positives of the stay, since the quality of the food was very good and the vegetarian option was excellent. The service was also very good and attentive. As a coffee drinker I did find the coffee undrinkable and opted for tea after the first day.

In two occassions coming into the hotel, there were homeless people seaiting on the steps which did not give a very good impression and made the place look like a cheap homeless shelter or hostel. Reception acted promptly to ask them to move when they were made aware.

As I had suggested the hotel to my friends, it was quite embarrassing and dissappoingting that it has declined to such an extent and I will not be staying there in the future if I come back to Manchester. There are now many new hotels and other options in the same part of town for the same cost.

Room Tip: Definitely request rooms with Windows. I could not imagine what the rooms without windows would be...
