Get off to a poor start and it will always be a struggle to recover. Myself and two other colleagues stayed here the other night on a business trip. At check in (about 6pm) we were greeted by a receptionist who barely looked up at us, couldn't be bothered to stand up and might as well thrown the keys at us. I thought maybe its just me but my other two colleagues were equally astonished at her total "surly teenager" ambivalence.
As I went up the warren of stairs I couldn't help but notice that all the carpets were very threadbare and poorly hoovered. When I reached my room it was tired at best and really needed a lick of fresh paint, hoover and refitted. I immediately asked for a better and bigger room and to be fair it was given to me. The evening meal was pretty average although the wine. list quite good and fair. Breakfast was fine. Really can't enthuse about the whole expereince.

when we arrived (sat 22nd June) we were greeted by a very well mannered receptionist, shame i cannot say the same on how we were treated on check out. (sunday 23rd june) were not asked if we had enjoyed our stay, was every thing ok not a single word of communication apart from what we were owed there is so much more to being a receptionist, than just a pretty face.
Breakfast, my daughter had a toasted bagel, which was burnt with thin scraping of cream cheese and smoked salmon. I had a toasted muffin, with poached eggs which had hard yolks and uncooked whites. It was supposed to be served with hollandaise sauce, in fact what i had was melted butter.
Room 65 was ok, crack in sink, had been prepared for single occupancy and i had to find a chambermaid to get another set of towels etc. mugs were really dirty and stained. We were woken up at 7am with people in the next room having a bath. no sound proofing at all.
So would we stay again.........no we would not.

The staff were exceptional in their service. No noise from the Airport. However I wouldn't say the room was spotless -,marks on walls and rather in need or redecoration and a wee bit pokey. But the bed was comfortable. I was traveling alone and the security or rather lack of it on the room made me a tad nervous.

We stayed here as a Friend got married in April. This part oif the trip was lovely.

The hotel now mind is very dated, its a nice setting with the mix of old and the airport being a stones throw away. The rooms were though not very good at all.

There was no heating in the room, just 3 electric plug heaters. The towel rail in the bathroom had electric wires protruding whilst the shower leaked so much it was almost a lake in the bathroom - not too safe when live electric wires are sticking out. The room was dark as there is only a tiny window thats overlooked by trees. The decor could do with redoing and the carpet threadbare.

The only good side was the check in staff - very friendly and helpful. I had just travelled 5 hours by car, so a nice lift to the room with my luggage was nice.

I really wouldn't choose this place by choice.

It didn't start well when we were checking in. A couple were trying to seek help with a toilet which wasn't flushing correctly and were told fairly bluntly by the Porter/driver behind reception that there was nothing that could be done in an off hand manner!
The Hotel has some good points : character, quirkyness, nice breakfast - very kind breakfast staff, very helpful young man who offered to help with luggage.nice soft white towels. No aeroplane noise despite being very close to airport.
Not so good points: Room 71 .Plumbing - you need to find a way to flush the toilet. Knob came off the four poster bed. ,Plumbing noise from neighbouring rooms. The tap for the shower fell off the wall into the bath with a loud crash at 6am when the people in the next room turned on their shower. Lighting isn't very good in the rooms.Difficult to find your way around the hotel - a bit of a maze. Porter's style of interacting with guests when we arrived.

Overall worth trying this hotel but it isn't for us.

We booked this as we had a very early flight the next day. Main factor was being close to the airport with a pick up service and restaurant.
Room was fine, cleanish but no hot water and at 5am too early to try and do anything about getting hot water for a shower before we left.
Staff were excellent very friendly and helpful nothing too much trouble,
Biggest disappointment was the restaurant, the food was very disappointing. Both meat dishes very over cooked and all in all a below average meal which was a shame.
Would stay again due to pick up drop off service and friendly staff but would not eat here again.

This is a fabulas Hotel close to Manchester Airport terminals, but what concerned me was the lack of security offered to guests when they had gone to there rooms for a night sleep.Guests could not lock there doors, the only security was a metal door restricter which worked in a similar way to a door chain in that it allowed anyone to open your door for 4 inches before being stopped from entering your room.On the night we stayed another guest got mixed up which room she was in and opened our door until the metal bar stopped her getting entry to our room

Room Tip: Preferably a room which locks the door on the inside as well as out

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Etrop Grange is a gracious Grade II listed Georgian Country House originally built in 1780 by school teacher William Moss and although located just a short distance from Manchester Airport, is anything but an airport hotel.Originally known as Moss House, the hotel was renamed Etrop Grange in 1984 by the owners after a local area called Etrop Green. Etrop Grange first opened for business in November 1985 as a fine dining restaurant on just the lower level and was slowly converted into a hotel over the next 13 years with a £3 million refurbishment. The Etrop Grange still retains it's Georgian charm with its stately facade matched by a luxurious interior of decadent chandeliers, heavy drapes and marble fireplaces.Due to modern intervention the hotel is now ideally located just two minutes from Manchester Airport and the M56, and is one of the few hotels in the area with no overhead aircraft noise making it an ideal hotel for business and leisure alike. Offering complimentary transfers to and from the airport and airport railway station (between 06:00 and 22:00), along with complimentary parking and WiFi for all guests, Etrop Grange is the perfect place to spend a relaxing day or night whatever the occasion. ... more   less
