“centrally located rooms abit small... but friendly staff. !!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2007

Well stayed at the thistle in July this year, to meet up with an old friend. Chose this hotel as didnt really know Manchester that well and it was close to the nearby Picadilly station and centrally located. On arrival the staff were helpful and allowed me to check in slightly early which was great. The room as stated in other reviews was quite small and compact but amply furnished the only thing I would really say was there was no music centre or DVD player which was a shame, the tv was abit complicated to see what channels were on offer!! The inhouse menu was rather over priced but loads of places to eat round and about so wasnt too fussed. As for other facilities the swimming pool was small but warm and staffed by a really friendly guy, at the time of our stay the spa pool wasnt working :( but he tried several times to get it going!! .. plenty of towels and changing rooms were secure. We arrived back at the hotel at approx 4am and had a few problems getting the card thingy to work ended up going down to the reception which was abit of a pain as we were on the 5th floor. !! The room was incredibly warm but had an air con unit which once u figured out how to get it working was fine.. All in all an enjoyable stay give it a go if your after a hotel in the heart of the city close to the nightlife this one would be a good choice

I stayed here for one night in June with work. To be honest it's a bit of a dump! The corridors were dirty with ripped wallpaper and holes in the ceiling. The room itself was very small and a bit dated but clean enough.

On the up side the hotel is in a good location and the breakfast was delicious.

I wouldn't stay here again and wouldn't be happy if I had paid my own money to stay. We got a discounted rate with work but the actual room rate advertised in reception was way way overpriced (about 150 for single 180 for double)!!

Hmm. Why did I not listen to the reviews? Booked in to the Thistle for 2 nights this week, but left after the first. The room was the smallest hotel room I've ever seen, and I mean oppresively small. The room and bathroom were very shabby with peeling wallpaper and paint. The plastic bath was actually yellowing with age. Could probably have put up with all that, but not the lack of aircon. Even though it wasn't that hot outside, it was ROASTING in the hotel. No aircon or even decent ventilation in the room, just a grubby fan caked in black dirt! They've blatantly not spent any money on renovations for years. The staff were on the whole polite though, and very apologetic when I checked out. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

My wife and I stayed in the Thistle while visiting friends in Manchester. It is in an excellent location for just about everything. Walking distance from Piccadilly Train station and the trams / buses at Piccadilly Gardens. It is also very close to the main shopping area around Arndale.

The staff were very accommodating by facilitating an early check-in (12:30 instead of 14:00). The room was clean and adequate, perhaps a touch on the small side but still very comfortable.

Breakfast was excellent and the waiting staff were very good.

I recently stayed at the Thistle Hotel near Piccadilly train station in Manchester and having first read the reviews, was more than a little apprehensive. On arrival my concerns were realised! We booked 3 non smoking rooms only to be given smoking rooms. One of my colleagues was asthmatic so this didn't help. Unfortunately as all hotels in Manchester were booked up that night we were forced to stay. We were placed in rooms on the 7th floor (of 7 floors) and as soon as we left the lift, the heat hit us. It was like stepping into a fire. It was unbearably hot, with no air conditioning in the rooms. Bathroom was basic but tiny. Light fittings were crooked, and everything felt slightly grubby. There was a fan in the room, but it was so hot, it was just circulating warm air. I woke in the morning feeling like I had been drinking. I realised this was probably dehydration from the heat. The single redeeming feature of this hotel was the staff. They were friendly and courteous and did what they could to find an air conditioning unit, although to no avail. I could not fault their attitudes at all. It's a shame the hotel is just so backward. My advice, if you like comfort and air conditioning, DO NOT stay at this hotel. I only wish the owners of this hotel would read the numerous unflattering reviews of the place and address the issues as a matter of urgency.

Stayed for one night mid week end of March. Very tired feeling about the place - lift doors opened and closed 3 times before it decided to move. Reception staff efficient. The actual room overlooked an inner yard absolutely no view, the bathroom was very tired. That said, the room was clean, breakfast good with efficient service. Not somewhere for a romantic weekend - but just OK for business. A spit from the station and China Town which was good.

I have stayed her several times over the last 4 years and it has really improved particularly in the restuarant. I have always found the staff friendly and helpful and efficient. It is a happy place to stay and in my experience everyone makes a real effort to make sure my stay is a positive and pleasant experience. I am sent here on business and always sigh with relief when I see this hotel name on my correspondance! Believe me there are far worse places within walking distance of this hotel!!!!
