“Good location - poor rooms”
Reviewed September 5, 2013

My boyfriend and I affectionately refer to our room at the Britannia as - "You know? The murder room we stayed in?" and the name has stuck. Customer service was fine and we had an Indian from inside the restaurant which was fine. The reason we call it the murder room was because it was obviously an old smoking room and the smoke and old tar clung to the curtains, carpets and bed sheets. The room was right next to the emergency exit and the bathroom door had an old punch hole that had been covered up and dented the inside of the bathroom door. It was very spooky - don't plan to stay there again unless I'm desperate.

Very basic rooms with no windows which was very confusing in the mornings! The rooms smelt very musky and as if someone had smoked in there. The communal area of the hotel was very pleasant with a lovely chandelier on entry which gives the hotel an elegant touch ! The location of the hotel is excellent with everything in walking distance. No parking available at the hotel which was a pain, however there were lots of nearby car parks that had reasonable day/night rates. Basic room for the price we payed.

I booked the Britannia through a Groupon offer and paid around £70 for two nights B&B in an Executive Room for a mid-week shopping trip.

Previous reviews are spot on as to how worn and dated the bedroom corridors are, as was the room itself. That said, the room was spacious and clean. We were on the 5th floor and the window only had small vents at one side that opened. It was quite stuffy with the outside temperature around 20 degrees. The tea tray was quite sparse, only 2 tea bags and 2 coffee sachets.
Breakfast is in the basement restaurant and was so poor we went to McDonalds the second morning! We were told a table number, not shown to the table, and had to almost chase a member of staff to get coffee as no one came to ask what we would like. Similarly had to ask for replenishment of ketchup and butter as it wasn't topped up. The cheap cereals were almost anaemic looking and apart from toast there was no other pastry selection such as croissants/muffins. The chef was out of the kitchen though checking on the hot food.
Staying mid-week we weren't bothered by noise from the adjacent bar/club but there were a few smokers rather the worse for wear outside and they had a habit of congregating on the hotel steps. Britannia could do with employing a door man to keep their area clear.
Would I stay again? For that same value and location just a couple of minutes from Piccadilly Gardens then probably yes. It's OK for a shopping/night out stay but not if you're looking for more of a pampered stay.

The building is simply stunning, from the outside and in. The location is perfect too. The rooms are adequate and what you'd expect in a typical hotel. When my guest and I returned with a third person we were asked to pay an extra £20 - which seemed reasonable considering they gave us a second room as a result. Overall, it was a bargain anyway so I don't feel comfortable criticising (the TV in our room was very dated though - expected it to be in black and white!) See through curtains meant I woke up earlier than I'd hoped too.

We never stayed for breakfast in the morning (£10 seemed a little steep - although we noted the discount if booked in advance) Unfortunately though, the location meant there is greater competition on the doorstep for a hearty fry up.

Staff were polite, even moreso given they were dealing with drunkards at 2am. I would never have stayed here had it not been for my friend. I would happily stay again (if the price is right)

Booked this hotel through a third-party website at a very discounted price which seemed surprising as the building the hotel is located in is beautiful. First impressions were fantastic with the entrance and lobby decorated to a very high standard (painted gold finishings and chandeliers) BUT the bedrooms were disappointing. The bed was relatively comfortable but the room I was put in didn't even have a window. There was a basic en-suite bathroom but I found the only sources of light (two lamps) made the room very hot with no solution to make the room cooler. Overall a very average stay, which for the price I paid can't be complained about too harshly. If I had paid full asking price I would definitely never stay again!

Stayed here for one night after my Teesside friend booked it without checking trip advisor. She's useless.

Snapshot Review.

Fabulous location.
Hideous decor, carpets interior.
Due a makeover 30 years ago.
Staff are liars and wouldn't know customer service from a bar of soap and would call you from a dog to a pig as soon as look at ya.

Huge mistake staying here. It's like a Boro crack den.

Don't waste your giro xxx

Terrible hotel which is ironic as it's situated in a fabulous listed building.
Rooms dirty. What kind of hotel has rooms with windows so high from the floor that you would need a ladder to see out
Staff rude.
Undesirables hanging around the entrance.
What a dump.Never again.

Room Tip: Go elsewhere.
