“Very dated hotel!!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 16, 2013

My daughter and I stayed at this hotel for 1 night on the 15th july and can honestly say we will never stay here again. Beautiful looking building from the outside especially at night as it is all lit up but thats as far as it goes. Our room was very small and in need of a good makeover! No air con and window screwed shut, it was like sleeping in a oven. The breakfast was cold, toast was cold and stale and juice glasses were dirty. Over all a very dingy dated old fashioned hotel. Never again!!

We stayed at the Britannia this past weekend. Firstly, the building looks great from the outside, but once inside, it's like taking a trip back to the 50s. Whilst I understand that grad 2 listed buildings are difficult to update, how hard it is to give the rooms a lick of paint and a general decor upgrade.

When we checked in and then got to our room, we found our "executive twin" to contain 1 double bed and 1 fold out camp bed with a matress about 1cm thick. When I went to reception to complain, I was told that was all they had. Once I complained to the manager, he managed to organise a full single bed to be moved into the room, but to be honest the first impression had long since been made. The rooms have no aircon, and whilst I understand that the weather is very unusual at the moment, surely that should be standard these days. With the window wide open, street noise poured in all through the night, and with it closed, the temperature soared. Lose lose.

The tv was some sort of throwback to the 80s and often made throbbing noises like it was about to explode. The shower would alternate from boiling hot to freezing cold and then back to boiling hot in a matter of seconds. Overall, the room was just really drab and basic

The car park that they recommend and give discounted prices on (down from £12 a day to £8.50 a day) is a good 10 minute walk away through some decidedly dodgy areas, don't bother.

Overall, for £90 a night, this was far from value for money. Won't be returning

Room Tip: I would imagine that higher rooms would have less traffic noise, but not a lot less.

I stayed at this hotel on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th July, I booked two months in advance and stated that I would like a quite room as I am a light sleeper. So the put me on the fifth floor in room 502 which is right above the disco!! Which didnt finish until 3:00am in the morning. There is no air conditioning in this hotel at all and due to the recent hot weather it was unbearable in the room, the windows only opened a faction of an inch. The shower runs hot and cold and you just cannot get it to be consistent. I complained the next day and they moved me to 340 which at least was at the back of the hotel which was slightly quieter but still no air con but they did supply a fan. Again the shower runs hot and then cold, overall a dreadful experience I will never stay again

Room Tip: Choose a room at the back, but even better get another hotel

I've stayed here a couple of times really just for a stop over
It's central but that's about it.basic and you get what you pay for.
Staff do their best but in need if redecoration and an all round overhaul
If they I'd that it could
be a great place to stay as a great location for anything your doing in Manchester be it Oort or shopping etc.i was actually in a single room and paid £30

I stayed in the Brittania for one night (tues 09/07/2013) - the hotel is a grand building in a great location, 10 minutes from Picadilly station and only 5 mins walk to the Arndale centre and Manchester's many attraction.
All the staff in the hotel were courteous and friendly, the rooms are basic but clean - at the price I paid I wouldn't have expected anything more.

The only downside was the lack of air con in the rooms, the weather was particularly hot when I was there which made things slightly uncomfortable, overall though I'd say this hotel is good value for money and has plenty of character.

Room Tip: Pay a bit extra to get a room with a window!

One of those independent hotels that are great but have seen better days. I'd still rather stay here at £45 a night than spend much more in a soulless high class place. The room was big enough, comfy bed, with a window that would only open 2 inches, but the road noise below might have quashed that one anyway. Slightly variable temperature on the shower. Didn't have breakfast.

Room Tip: Looking out the front on the road will be noisier.

The room was clean but tired, bed needed repairing and we had to push together the posts to secure them (4 poster bed). We booked a champagne weekend but never received the champagne, we should have had a free upgrade but ended up paying £10 for it. Food was worse than school dinners in the 1970's and spatulas on the hot plate covered with tinfoil for heat protection - the tinfoil looked old and used like it hadn't been changed for a couple of days - a real hazard for bacteria growth. Breakfast choice was limited, if you like full English you are fine but if you like continental forget it. The cereals were cheap and the only choice of fruit and yogurt was grapefruit. No croissants or mixed fruit. On the up side it was right next to the city centre which was nice as we didn't have to get a taxi. We have e-mailed with feedback from our stay but still await a reply after 7 weeks. A Travelodge with a box of cereal and carton of milk for breakfast and local restaurant for dinner would have been better and less expensive. No-we will not be going back.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else
