“Lunch buffet value?”
Reviewed October 24, 2012

Over many years whilst working in central Manchester, I have patronised a number of lunchtime buffets and this is one of three reviews of my most-visited venues.

The Britannia hotel in Portland Street uses its lower ground floor restaurant to offer a 3-course lunchtime buffet meal for £6.50. There is a choice of starters – soup or pate, – which is brought to your table. A choice of roast beef, turkey or ratatouille were the hot dishes, which change daily, with a choice of hot vegetables or salad items. Dessert comprises of gateaux slices of a couple of varieties, with pouring cream available. Tap water is provided via a glass container whilst the adjacent bar is often open for cash purchases.

The staff were attentive and starters ordered and served promptly. An adequate amount of the roast was served and some of the self-service vegetables were over-cooked. The gateaux are only ‘so-so’.

The restaurant opens at 11.30 until 16.00.

Verdict: The quantity of food provided for the price is fairly good but quality reflects the price charged. Better value is available at sister hotel, Sachas, which is £1.50 less, and the choice of main courses is greater.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for two nights, a Friday and Saturday. The reception staff were friendly, we received a smoking room with a window which was an added bonus, as on our ticket it said no window which to be honest I was dreading!

The decor and hotel itself is quite charming if a little old fashioned, the room didn't have a main light which was a bit odd though there were two lamps which lit it up okay. The location is perfect; literally around the corner from several bus stops, five minutes to Deansgate shopping, 5 minutes from Canal Street and plenty of nightlife nearby. Though be warned: if you have the window open, be prepared to hear all the antics of a drunken Saturday night crowd and thumping music. With the window closed it's barely audible, especially if you've had a couple yourself!

Overall I was very happy with my stay. Everything was clean and tidy, the location was good and our room was nice if a little on the small side, though perfectly adequate for two staying for a weekend. After reading some negative reviews on here I was preparing for the worst but I was pleasantly surprised. It's not all bad, some people just can't be pleased!

Stayed last night as a friend booked it for a night out in Mancunia.
If he hadn't paid,I would've walked !
Shocking,shoddy place.
I presume it was a dump, even in it's heyday!

Wallpaper falling off and a frequent for all the hookers around the corner!

Boiled bacon to boot at breakfast!

A small single room in the turret facing a busy road was OK, I guess, for the special price I paid, but the TV and phone didn't work and in the morning neither did the lift. Not good when you're on the 6th floor and need to carry your suitcase down. Nice, friendly people in reception but not well organised.

Room Tip: If you take advantage of cheap offers expect to be allocated a badly located room.

My husband and I stayed here for four nights october, 2012, the staff were lovely, the hotel was quaint, friendly and clean, but, our room on the fourth floor did not have a window, this was dark and clostraphobic, there was not enough air, in the morning you had no curtains to pull back to see what the weather was like, you did not know if you needed a coat or warm clothes or what to wear, it was such a pity because hotel is a lovely location, this was terrible and I do believe should not be allowed. Also the bed creaked and squeaked at every slight move and sleep was impossible.

Room Tip: Ask for a room "with windows" and a silent bed.

Nice check in and receptionist was friendly. Room was a little on the small side and we did ask for a smoking room in advance and got one so that was good although the room overall had seen better days even taking into consideration it was a smoking room. Also quite small however so if you had a lot of baggage you would struggle, electrics and not all of the lights worked, wardrobe was awkward to get to and very small. Extractor did not work in bathroom but it was relatively clean and plenty of hot water. Bed clean and comfortable but did get a little cold at night.
On returning to our hotel after a few drinks we did find the porter quite rude on our return all the rest of the staff were pleasant though. Breakfast was buffet style but ok and plenty to drink and eat. Location was also perfect for us. Not fantastic but not terrible either

We were placed here along with approx 60 other people maybe more ! by Thomas cook on the afternoon of thur 27th sept after a delay of 24hrs to our 5* holiday in the Dominican . On arrival we were rudely told we would have to wait as rooms were not available at that time! We had now been awake for 16hrs . We were not even offered a complimentary drink of tea or coffee . 1 hr later we were given 2 rooms for my husband & myself & my daughter and her partner. My daughter was on the 5th floor and no lifts were working and no one even offered to assist with cases which as u can imagine for a 2 week holiday were heavy. The stair were lethal and sloppy and elderly. Couples could be seen trying to struggle up many of the other delayed passengers were carrying elderly passengers cases up the stairs for them. We were then told we could only eat at a particular time slot , we were treated like second class citizens throughout. Later the lifts were fixed , I received a phone call from a friend who happened to have rang my daughter to tell me the fire brigade were em route as she & her bf had been trapped in the lift for 20 mins totally shocking and scary . All they got was a cheap bottle of cider passed off as champagne . It turns out another elderly person had fallen down the stairs the day before and was badly hurt . The staff have no manners and customer service skills the most pleasant people were the firemen who assisted . Cannot believe people pay to stay in this hovel and when I saw the prices I nearly choked! . The food was terrible and Luke warm. This place needs to be closed down due to all aspects espeshially health & safety . If ya thinking about staying there is book into a local hostel you would get better service by far!!!!

Room Tip: doubt there is one! however the steps on the outside are very nice !
