This is the former Princess on Portland totally renovated. A very nice hotel, ideally located between the Gay Village and Chinatown, within ten minutes walking from Arndale Center, Town hall, cathedral, Deansgate....

Very helpful staff, nice bedrooms, good breakfast and not expensive so...a very good choice in Manchester city center

Arrived at the hotel Tuesday morning to be greeted by very friendly staff - little did we know a few hours later Manchester city centre would be in lock down for the looting and riots! At 1700 when went to check in the GM (Jeremy) advised us of the updates and we decided not to eat out. Good decision, not only with what was going on in the city but the food in the restaurant was excellent! Due to the lights being switched off it was a very romantic table for 9! Nothing was too much hassle for the team and the service from Emma and Jeremy was excellent. The staff had to stay the night and even the next morning they were on top of their game as still as cheery and friendly. It simply was outstanding service!

This was a visit I will remember , partly because it was the night of the riots and we found ourselves in a lock down situation, but just as much due to the friendliest staff who at lunchtime on arrival, even before we knew of potential rioting, gave us a warm welcome with excellent conference facilities.
We had arranged to eat in town and as late afternoon arrived it was clear that we would not be safe leaving the hotel, the restaurant has limited space but they accommodated a group of 10 of us and as the lights needed to be switched off due to the riots outside and not wanting to attract attention to ourselves, we ate by candlelight served by multitasking staff who had clearly not expected to be serving quite so many people that night.
The food was first class - well done chef and team
The waitress Emma, looked after us superbly whilst doubling as bar tender as well.
The Manager was cool under pressure, calm and in control of the situation as we finally needed to leave to retire to our rooms for safety reasons.
The staff were unable to go home that night and yet the next morning greeted us warmly, with professionalism and normal service resumed.
Hotel standards are higher then I regularly witness and represents fantastic value for money in any case. I would definitely return, whether on business or pleasure. I sincerely hope the parent company gives the staff the recognition they so deserve for their crisis management, sorry I do not remember the managers name!

I stayed here for one night with a colleague on the night that rioters took to the streets of Manchester. We arrived before any trouble started, but the hotel were already in touch with the police and locked the building down shortly after we arrived. In fact we hadn't been able to find the entrance but they'd seen us on the street and sent a member of staff out to show us the way in.

We obviously had to eat in the hotel, but this was no hardship as the food was very good and the service very friendly and professional. The lights had to be kept very low so people on the street couldn't tell it was a bar, and at about 10.30 the police advised they clear the public rooms. Although we were asked to go to our rooms, the hotel staff were still very calm and friendly. There was no actual harm caused to the hotel that we could see, but it was a very noisy night on the streets. Next morning breakfast was very good, and there was no sense that the problems outside had caused standards to slip inside.

As far as the hotel itself was concerned, my colleague had a missing light bulb in her room, but otherwise both rooms were clean and comfortable and a reasonable size for a city centre hotel. The decor was modern and fresh if a little corporate, as would be expected. Overall however I couldn't praise the staff enough for making me feel safe and for the way they coped in exceptionally difficult circumstances.

I was staying at The Macdonald Townhouse this week on Tuesday night which was the night the riots happened in Manhcester. The staff were amazing - couldn't believe how cheerful and helpful they were considering it was like World War 3 outside!
Aside from the excellent staff (Emma in the Restaurant and Jeremy the manager in particular) the hotel itself was beautiful. The rooms were very spacious and comfortable. The food was excellent too.

I would absultely stay here again and will recommend to everyone I know!

I have stayed here on business a number of times since it has been refurbished. The first was great. The second I got in from some out of hours work at 4am exhausted to find that I couldn't get any hot water out of the shower, neither of the bedside lamps worked, and the TV was on a wall which would make it impossible to watch from bed. Mixed feelings...

Stayed at the hotel Sat 6th August for one night. The hotel is right on the corner of Portland Street - used to be Princess Hotel I think. Anyway check in was swift and the room was fab!. Huge room, air con, lovely bathroom with both bath and shower. Had a drink in the bar - lovely spacious modern hotel. Staff very good and friendly. Didn't eat in the restaurant so can't comment and didn't have breakfast as room only.
Drinks were expensive but what do you expect when in the middle of the city of Manchester? Location is great - walking distance to bars, shops and restuarants. Can't wait to go back there. All is all a very nice experience.
