I realise that this place has 100% great reviews so I booked with confidence when some friends were coming over for dinner. I so wanted it to live up to the reviews but couldn't help feel a sense of disappointment throughout. While the approach to the cottage, and the cottage exterior are beautiful and quaint, the feel inside and the decor don't seem to match. In fact a friend commented that the decor resembled a premier inn restaurant when it needs a lovely, homely cottage feel, ideally with an open fire! Anyway, clearly the food is the main event so we read the menu with excitement, but the results were mixed, While there were some very impressive dishes, there were some that seemed lacking. The souffle for instance was technically great, but not very tasty. The biggest disappointment was the steak, which was very grizzly and completely soaked in the sauce, certainly not worth its £20 price tag. However, to end on a positive, there were some really nice dishes, including the mushroom, artichoke and gruyere flamiche, and although some of the artichokes were cold, on the whole this was a very well constructed dish and a very nice vegetarian offering that is a lot more interesting than the veggie option on a lot of menus.
While our experience was far from awful, the nearby competition, especially in west didsbury, is so good that unfortunately I'm sad to say no4 didn't deliver quite enough to warrant a return visit.
