“Bottom Marks and real disappointment at Afternoon Tea.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 17, 2013

I pre-booked afternoon tea for my family of 8 adults and 6yr old grandson. It was my eldest daughter's 40th birthday and we travelled from Kent and Essex to be with my daughter to celebrate her birthday. On arrival we were given little to no info and the overall service was extremely poor mainly due the minimal staff on duty who seemed unable to cope. We waited ages for our table to be cleared of dirty crockery after requesting this on at least 3 separate occasions. The food was acceptable although the sandwiches consisted of two dinner size plates for 8 adults and a child. The assorted cakes were tasty but overall not very good value. I would describe the venue and experience as chaotic and impersonal with individuals walking through the tea area to get to the bar and members of a wedding party walking past. Worst of all the 40th birthday cake agreed for my daughter's celebration had not even been prepared. It is impossible to recover what was meant to be a memorable occasion. There needs to be closer supervision of staff and proper exchange of information from booking to event. I was really disappointed and upset by lack of professionalism, poor customer service and personal attention shown by the Hotel staff. I am really sad how poor the afternoon tea turned out to be.

We've just got back from a night in the Midland. We've had a great break. We did the valentines offer. The champers was waiting 4 us in our room with our chocs, the meal was delicious and served by lovely staff. We made use of the pool, jacuzzi and sauna which we enjoyed and the young man was friendly and helpful from the leisure centre. Our room was great with a big comfy bed, nice bathroom and plenty of tea and coffee.Breakfast in bed was a nice treat. Friendly staff make a big difference to us which is one of the reasons we would go back to the Midland in future.
Thank you to the staff at the Midland

Stayed here a couple of years ago and was distinctly unimpressed. Its improved considerably since then but still needs some work in some areas. Stayed in a room facing inwards (323) which is definitely preferable to the noisy rooms facing the road given the trams trundling past at very late and very early hours, dinging bells. Might give a feeling of 'traditionalism' to some but for light sleepers it's a nightmare. Rooms have improved although still feel a bit shabby in the corners. No iron or ironing board and some bizarre styling (iron storage boxes for a fridge?). Check in is still slow - they need to up the staffing levels when they have conferences on. Bar service in the evening was incredibly slow and objected to an automatic 'service charge' on the bill when I had to stand and wait for 20 mins to be served. Dinner was fine and breakfast plentiful. Staff much friendlier.

Room Tip: Choose and inward facing room to avoid the noise of the trams

Visited on business, really friendly traditional hotel, great staff, had excellent food, lovely buffet at lunch, 3 course meal at dinner (part of the seminar dinner -large group) and everything was lovely, salmon mousse wrapped in smoked salmon, lamb dinner, really delicious, and breakfast the following morning was one of the best cooked breakfasts I've had.
All the staff in the restaurant, bar, the concierge and reception were great. And the hotel atmoshpere is lovely.
Only small issue was the downstairs ladies toilets which could do with an update. The rooms however have modern facilities and I would definitely pick this hotel if I was going back to Manchester.

We stayed at The Midland for 1 night over the valentines weekend.

When we were being checked-in the whole process was very robotic, we was asked the standard question of if we had stayed at the hotel before and when we said no the lady said "welcome to The Midland hotel" but the tone of voice was like she had said it a million times and we was just another couple staying at the hotel. It would have been nice for the conversation to be more natural and be more of a sincere welcome. Also we was not offered any help with our bags but other customers was.

We have stayed in luxury 5 star hotels in London and paid less for them so we was hoping for a very luxurious room and facilities.

We stayed in room 112 and it was very spacious and the bathroom was nice. We felt that the room was looking dated and the furniture in the room didn't meet the high standard we was hoping for. The mattress was not comfy and squeaked when ever we moved.

We was not asked about our stay on check-out.

We felt it was not worth the money we paid and the luxury was in the main reception of the hotel rather than the rooms.

Breakfast was included with our rate and was plenty-full. There was hot food (English breakfast) and cold items like pastries, cereals, yoghurt and cold meat.

We went here for my sister in laws hen night - a group of 12 of us - and when I saw how stately it was I thought it was a mistake and that they would not approve of a Hen Party. It was lovely though and I was mistaken. Great location, lovely rooms, and we were comfortable as a group even though we all came back in a less than sober state in the early hours!! We were not raucous or wild. And we did behave. But coming back at the late hour to such a lovely hotel made the weekend all that much more special! Thanks!
