“Not worth it... Especially if you're hungry.”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 24, 2014

My girlfriend and I visited Zaika for valentines day this year and it was a huge disappointment. We were told over the phone there was a set menu for the evening and that we couldn't order off the usual menu, which was fine. We arrived early on in the evening and the restaurant was relatively empty, only 3 other couples were there. Despite this, the service was horrendous throughout the duration of our meal. The set menu was a set starter and dessert with a choice of one of 4 main courses and it was priced at £22 per person or £30 per person if you wanted to try all 4 main meals. The starter came and it was delicious, however the portion size was tiny, even for a starter and this became a recurring theme throughout the night. We opted to go with the more expensive set menu and try all 4 of the main courses. Once again the portion size was tiny, it felt like they had only brought us enough food for one person and some of the food went cold incredibly fast like they hadn't cooked all the dishes at the same time. The food was tasty but the for the amount of food and for the price it wasn't worth it. The dessert was an awful and dry slice (guess the size) of chocolate cake.

The service was terrible all night, the waiter serving us was useless, my girlfriend ordered a glass of wine and he brought a bottle instead, which he'd first taken to a different table by accident. He kept saying that they had new staff in and it was their first night (on valentines???), despite it being him making the mistakes. He also forgot which course we were on (I should have been dishonest and got him to bring another portion of mains as the first lot wasn't enough). Despite informing us that we could only order off the set menu, multiple people came in and ordered off the normal menu and I had to ask for the bill twice.

Overall the food was generally quite tasty but tiny portions and not good enough to warrant the overinflated prices. My girlfriend and I are quite laid back, are not usually in a hurry and find bad service quite funny, but Zaika took the mick. As students we don't generally have much money and to spend it on this meal felt like we wasted it. There are much better Indian restaurants in Manchester (Akbar's is just down the road), which are much better value for money. Avoid.

“Start thinking!!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2014 via mobile

We went out here with some friends for a birthday meal a few weeks ago.

The food was just pretty average. Nothing amazing but tasted as you would expect.

The service really wasn't the best. Despite the restaurant being fairly empty on a Saturday night, we had to wait 15 mins for a table. When we got there, we had been placed on the upstairs landing - so everyone was walking past to go to the kitchen/loos despite other rooms being available. Not only that, but they made the table huge - we pretty much had to shout across to one another.

Not ideal, and with the plethora of great curry houses in Manchester, not an experience I'm going to repeat!

“My valentines day hell!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 14, 2014

On the 13th February I visited zaika to celebrate valentines day with my girlfriend! 2 days before my visit I rang up in order to book a table and have a bottle of rose wine on the table for when we arrive! I also rang again on the day of my visit too make sure that the bottle of wine would be on the table for when I arrived with my girlfriend which they insisted it would be! So when I arrived at the resteraunt it looked nice and then I entered to see that the resteraunt was totally empty and not one person was in resteraunt eating, my wine was not on the table and the atmosphere was horrific, the waiter after 10mins finally come over to me for the first time to tell me his fellow collegue had set the wine out on another table and he had put us on the wrong table which was a lie as I saw him make the wine when he was behind the bar and put it on another table as he had forgotten which annoyed me!! Then it came to the starters which were ok in terms of the popadoms, however the chutneys were horrible and my girlfriend actually spat out the onions which are her favourite which shows how horrible they were! At this point I wanted a drink but there was not one waiter on the resteraunt floor and there wasn't throughout my meal meaning I had to get up and knock on the kitchen door to get the chefs attention to get the waiter to get me a glass of coke, but it wasn't till midway through my main course I got up to get a drink as I believed surely the waiter would at some point come out but he didn't, and he didn't come to ask how the meal was at any point until he gave me the bill! I had then ordered tandori chicken and I thought the only way was up but it was the chicken was burnt and lacked flavouring and the salad on the side was tacky and looked nothing like the presentation shown on the resteraunt menu! This further annoying me as I thought this resteraunt was upper class? So it then came to the mains and I thought it will be ok with a chicken tikka masala and a chicken tikka jalfrezzi being traditional dishes in an Indian resteraunt so surely nothing can go wrong... Or maybe it can in this resteraunt! The chicken tikka masala was yellow and tasted creamy like a yoghurt lacking flavour and tasting very much like a chicken korma, so I complained to the waiter when I finally got up and actually went into the kitchen to get him as there was still no sign of a waiter on the resteraunt floor! They did change the dish but all they did was add colouring to the curry they said so it is red/orange like a more typical tikka masala colour, so it still tasted dreadful and as for the jalfrezzi it was so spicy my partner couldn't even eat one mouthful due to how spicy it was and usually she can eat jalfrezzi and madras curries without a problem! Also the nan bread was cold yet black due to it being burnt and the rice was well under cooked which I was disappointed in as even I can cook nan bread and rice! At the end of the meal I did complain when I got the bill to which I got spoke to aggressively by the manager as he said his food is the best, however I was only voicing my oppinion and to be spoke to like I was in front of my girlfriend was humiliating and made my partner scared meaning I quickly paid and had to leave the resteraunt! This resteraunt is a big no no!!!

“Slow service but food was fine”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 29, 2014

I had to wait over half an hour and the place was pretty much empty - maybe they forgot my order, I don't know. But when it came it was fine. The place is clean and smart, but somehow a bit lacking in atmosphere. Not at all expensive considering it is right in the middle of Manchester. Still, the main thing is the food and that was pretty good.

“Quickly going downhill”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 21, 2013

I booked a party table for Christmas there were 16 of us and we wanted to go "A la carte" rather than the party menu.

To make things easier I sent in a pre order, however this was not the case.

During the whole of our meal the waitress never came and took a drink order from me (we were a party of 16) we received the meals, one was missing and then had to wait nearly 10 mins for the rice to come.

The meals were not hot when they arrived, and several sauces/ dressings were not available. How can you run out of tamarind dressing the week before Christmas when people have pre-ordered??

This was previously my favourite Indian in Manchester, it has really gone downhill over the past nine months, food and service are greatly lacking yet you still pay the same...

10% service was also automatically added to the bill, we paid, however service was not worth £50 as there was one girl running up and down stairs and completely unaware of upselling and customer service.

I would suggest giving this place a miss for a good while until they can sort of the management of the restaurant, the ordering to ensure they have everything available, and the service.

its a shame things have slipped so far.
